[Request] American Style Fridge

Anyone know any good deals going on for American Style fridges at the moment? I have been to DID, Harvey Normans, Clearys, PowerCity and Currys, nothing in my price range (1000 – 1100 euros) other than the Samsungs with fake (plastic) steel finish.

Anyone know if its any cheaper in North? Newry is only an hour by road from where I am.

    Thanks in advance!

Very much doubt it would be cheaper in the North. Appliances in general seem to be cheaper here than the UK and North.

Was looking at some very nice full size fridges in Curry's Newry last w/e....can't recall prices on the high end stuff (I was window shopping for a smaller one) but they definitely had better prices in the range I was interested in than any place I've looked in down south.
It's pretty easy to get to; just head on down the Newry bypass about 2 miles or so...you'll come to a roundabout, B&Q have a store there behind Maccy D's...Curry's is in the corner of that retail park.

Thanks Wertz, thats very helpful indeed.

Mezcita, I was told otherwise - 'll go up this weekend and have a look myself - I have a price list from Comet (website) which is the cheapest so far, but they don't deliver outside mainland UK.

Positron. Good luck with your search. The american fridges are great. Got one 3 years ago when moved into new house. One with same height fridge and freezer side by side.

Word of advice though, make sure you have a door big enough to get it into your kitchen.

We got it from Currys in Blanchardstown. They were great, delivered fine. But...

If wouldn't fit in the front door of the house, took it around the back, where we have sliding doors. It wouldn't go in the sliding door. Took the sliding door off the rails, still no joy.

Now the packaging added probably 3 inches to each side of the fridge itself, so I went to unpack it to try get it in the door (gap where the door used to be). The delivery men stopped me at this point. Maybe it's changed since then, but the delivery men were willing to take the fridge back up to this point, but once it's been opened and taken from the packaging, they wouldn't take it automatically, so they were saying that if it got damaged after unpacking they would need to get a manager involved.

Anyway, I rang the store manager who spoke to them, and they helped me unpack the fridge (they were fine with this, just wanted authorisation).

The inpacked fridge still didn;t fitnthrough the door. Started to worry at this point.

Then, I took the doors off the fridge itself.

Finally it fitted through the door and into the kitchen. Re assembled the fridge and all OK.

The delivery men told me that most of the american style fridges they were delivering had to be taken back because they could not be gotten into the owners houses...

So, if you buy up north, make sure that you can get the fridge into your house.

Thanks dancin, mines a standard semi-d, and the sliding door at the back is again standard size too – but the LG models that I am looking at is only 60 cm deep, and I hope I will be able to get it in without removing the door panels – of course, from your post and reading other posts, I gather its easier (and recommended) to remove the fridge doors, ‘ll keep that in mind. Thanks again!

So far, the Local shop in Drogheda seems to be to cheapest – for a particular LG model. I will update after checking prices in Newry.

Had a nightmare with one of these as well.

I ordered the fridge and paid for it,
but only realised as an after thought that it may not fit.

It eventually did (with 1 inch to spare after taking packaging off) but it was very tight.. and the last thing I wanted to do was scratch it/ damage it by squeezing it in the door.

Make sure you know what you're doing as well if taking the doors off,
esp if it has a water dispenser as you can damage the water line quite easily.

Thanks shamalive, will keep that in mind. In fact I am more inclined towards one without the ice/water thingee on the door - I know thats the major benefit with American fridges, but its just that we don't drink that much (not anymore anyway), and the extra freezer room will come handy too.

The other question is if I should wait till Christmas/NewYear for a better bargain…

And its that time of the year again, and there seems to be a good deal going on the exact same LG model that I was looking for - €799 at Currys in the the republic, and £450 in Newry. Heading that way tomorrow - fingers crossed!

Not sure if they will deliver here, or how much would it cost etc, will know tomorrow...

Got one in Newry - £450 - about €660 - for the exact same model, and they are selling it for 799 (one day only special price, otherwise 899) - rip-off republic indeed!
