    Hi srdb20!

Just to clear up some of the terminology you've been hit with already!

Andy Ryan runs Straight Blast Gym (SBG) Northside. It's a new club and so there are a lot of beginners there, so you certainly won't be the only one.

Andy is a top bloke and has been multiple times national Judo champion.
As far as I know, he teaches classes in judo (lots of throws), Brazilian jiu jitsu (lots of wrestling on the ground with chokes and joint locks) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) which is basically putting all the throws and ground work together with kicking and punching etc.

If you're more into the kicking and punching (and kneeing and elbowing!) side of the things, Bridgestone Muay Thai (Thai boxing) is an excellent club and holds most of the national belts - they also have a beginners class. They are in the city centre, just off Dorset street, but their website is down at the moment.

Those are two in particular I'd recommend, but maybe check with your local sports/community centre - they might have something you can try out. People train for all sorts of different reasons, so my advice is just to do the rounds until you find a club and style you like (most places have no problems giving you a class for free to see if you like it).

What do they teach in the northside gym?

Any ideas you have regarding clubs like that "twisted ankle"?

Clive nice one man, i was feeling a bit over whelmed there with all mma and sbg!

The main reasons i want to do it are for the Mental discipline gained and the physical attributes... so basically any club that can give me both!

Which one of the if any do u guys think?

    Howdy,

We train this evening at 8 to 9pm if you want to pop down for a free class.

We're in the scout hall on the corner of Ballygall Road and Griffith Avenue. It's primarily a Tae kwon Do class but we box/kickbox/anything too. :D

If it's not what you want no bother, but feel free to pop down in any case.

The gyms recommended above are excellent too, but mine has an indescribable aura which makes it superior ;):D

    Cheers,
    Barry

    Hi Roper,

    Do you have many beginners?

I wouldn't be able to make it tonight, but when is the next class?

How long does it take to get the basics down?

Is there much in the way of competitions?

Whats normally involved in a training session?

    Sorry about all the questions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. Quite a few at the mo due to it being September and all.
I wouldn't be able to make it tonight, but when is the next class?
saturday afternoons, 4to5pm. In October this clas will be swapping on to Friday evenings.
How long does it take to get the basics down?
Depends on a)the individual and b)what you mean by the basics!
If you mean how long does it take before you're "getting there", then I'd say most beginners start getting the idea after a couple of sessions. After that, it's down to the individual. The beauty of it is that you'll still sweat and have a good session even if it's your first time out.
Is there much in the way of competitions?
We've been a bit slack in the last few months (babies do that!) but we're getting back on track now and will probably be going to at least one before the end of the year. Comps are optional for anyone who trains though.
Whats normally involved in a training session?
Kicking and punching primarily ;) We do a lot of padwork, a lot of fitness work, a lot of sparring at various levels. We mix it up on occasion. We also have a traditional element (about 10% of training time over a month)
    Sorry about all the questions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's okay, it's my favourite thing to post about :D

Yes I am. We must rectify that sometime Clive.
