I was wondering if anyone would recommend these, or am i better off spending the same money on a "regular" pc. Also if i bought one in the US would there be any problems using it here?

At college so will need it for project work, dissertation etc
broadband, photo and music management, just general run of the mill things. Nothing requiring an uber machine. I just don't want to get something that will be out-of-date as soon as its delivered.

I would'nt say the iMac will be out of date soon, but Apple are replacing the current chip with an Intel chip soon http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jun/06intel.html

Not sure if that makes it "out of date" or not but some would argue this is a bad time to buy a mac...
