So the thread below this (at time of writing) is about yet another Adam Sandler vehicle.

But what's your favourite American football movie? For me, it's got to be Little Giants. The realism, the bone crunching tackes, the chess-like strategy of that guy from Little Shop of Horrors vs that guy from Married With Children. Total class. And the underdogs win it too, totally unexpected finale.

j/k. My fave is far and away Any Given Sunday. Pacino rocks, Diaz is a bitch, and even that fool Foxx is passable. Stick Dennis Quaid, James Woods and LL Cool J into the mix, add Stone's passion for realism, and a great soundtrack, and you have one of the better movies of 1999, and easily the best gridiron movie of all time.

Any Given Sunday is a good football film, The Longest Yard is a good football film, Friday Night Lights is a great football film.

To me Friday Night Lights is the best american footballl film that I have seen, it captures every aspect of the game.

The best football film is Any Given Sunday, without a doubt, it really feels as if you are in the action

The Longest Yard is a good football film.
The original and not the dreadful remake.
My personal favourite is Any Given Sunday

Pacino is a legend. That speech is amazing and makes the film.

    Remember the titans is great!
The Longest Yard is so funny!

Friday Night Lights is fantastic, one of the best films I saw this year. Although it is more about the impact football has in a small town - the coach is paid more than the principal, tons of money going into the ground. We can defaintely relate with local GAA clubs here.

Remember the Titans is definitely my favorite.
    Rudy was pretty good too.
Never saw Varsity Blues, but some of my friends really like that movie.

Does the Waterboy fall into this catagory ?

If so then i think that it is the greatest american football flick.

    :D

favourite is Friday night lights....apparently the author of the book isn't welcome in odessa anymore

Loved Rudy for sheer disneyesqe cheese.

Remember the titans and varsity blues have some awesome football moments

I hated and i mean hated Any Given Sunday....it was over the top, annoyingly edited and the actors chewed the scenery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭Domer

It has to be RUDY for me too. I am an Alumi of Notre Dame so it has special meaning. I was back on campus last week for the ND-USC game...and the real RUDY spoke at the Pep Rally on Friday night...in front of 45,000 fans...it was amazing...unfortunately we lost the game thanks to a pair of very bad calls, but what a game!!!

RUDY, RUDY, RUDY!!!!!!!! (and GO IRISH!!!!!)

("Knute Rockne, All American" is also a good football movie with Ronald Reagan as George Gipp, and the famous "Win one for the Gipper" speech by Rockne)

Definitely Any Given Sunday, The inches speech is still up there with my all time top favourite movie scenes.

I have to agree...the speeh is class!!! Foxx and Pacino when he invites him for dinner is amazing also, the hits are class and there is even the eye popping out incident (Zeus for the Browns a few years ago)

Remember the Titans is a classic though, what it stands for is what makes is great!

Friday Night Lights is excellent too and Rudy is up there but it has to be Any Given Sunday:D

How about All the Right Moves.

    :)

Honestly, even though Football is my favorite sport there is not a be-all-and-end-all football movie. There are a lot of okay football movies.. but nothing spectacular.

Hoosiers is an Excellent Basketball Movie. There is no Hoosiers for football.

while not entirely a football movie, this move is excellent and leaves a lump in your throat!!

For an underdog movie you cant beat rudy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

Yup Rudy is just class, what a show ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,202 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

All time classic: Horse Feathers. Contains the funniest Football scenes ever.
Not another Teen Movie is good, too.

Not about Football per se, but excellent. Friday Night Lights is the best pure Football documentary, IMHO.

Friday night lights was very good but the replacements was a classic.

Any Given Sunday or Friday Night Lights,

The T.O. cameos in AGS are good including his rushing TD.

Pacino is just brilliant as Tony.

FNL is more of a realistic kind of film though, great viewing also

Saw Rudy today for the first time, got in from work at 10 this morning and it was on sky movies. Saw the first 45 minutes before I was fast asleep. It was repeated around 5 and I watched it again - RUDY RUDY RUDY!!

Still, Firday Night Lights is my favourite football film. Followed by Any Given Sunday, The Waterboy and the rest.
