Recently rebuilt my pc because it was basically in need of it. Slow and programs were acting the feck.
So Xp pro back on andall my programs reinstalled decided to do a check disk. It said some file segments
were unreadable, 4 to be exact and also it deleted some indexes.

My question is what is causing this and is there anything i can do to fix it?

Just one question, how old is the hard drive?

Did u reformat the hard drive before u re-installed windows? Do that then do a full scandisk. XP doesnt do this in windows but will ask do u wanna do it next time the PC boots up. that will scan for bad segments, and as far as i know, it will mark them as bad sectors so XP will avoid them. Bad sectors are usually found on old hard drives. they're just wear and tear.

Looks like u might have to scour the many PC shops in the metropolis that is Ballylynan, Co. Laois for a new hard drive soon! ;)
