Sleeping Patterns

I've been sleeping very oddly lately and cant seem to figure out why.

I've woken up a few times from really scary, vivid nightmares. I do have nightmares quite a bit so this isnt too strange. I've been possibly having them a bit more lately though.

The other night I also woke up roaring laughing and couldnt stop for ages.

I also think I was sleep walking last night. I have a strange vague memory of standing on the landing in my house.

I'm not paticularly stressed about anything at the moment - well no more then the usual stresses. I havent been eating or drinking anything different at night. I cant seem to figure out whats going on.

i have never been able to figure it out - i would almost say i suffer from nightmares but every so often i will wake up and i'll be crying from them i occasionally sleep walk but more often then not i just kick the stuffing out of my bf in my sleep

just wondering should this be in PI?

Not sleeping is a pain in the hol*e but anyway

U know the normal stuff avoid

    Coffee, drink, cigarettes, stimulants .etc

Also some say cheese gives them nightmares

Also avoid eating anything after 8pm!! OK a tiny snack is fine but eating dinner at 10 or 11 at night means its sitting in your stomach digesting while you are sleeping so can mess up your sleeping paterns.

Try some ovaltine or hot chocolate or horlicks or something a half hour before bedtime. Also dont watch TV directly before going to bed.. Maybe read a chapter of a book or something..

I wonder if this is true.

This might sound stupid, but I used to get really horrible nightmares after I drank Holsten out of cans. And I am not talking about getting pissed... just a few cans. Never touched that stuff since.

Anyway, are you sure that nothing is bothering you?
Sometimes the smallest things that you dismiss to be nothing can send your sleeping patterns crazy.

Typical Irish weather - unpredictable. Could this affect sleep?

As for the eating and smoking and all that, I guess I have been eating a bit later these days, mainly due to working late and I do smoke.

I'm not finding it difficult getting to sleep - however for about a month before the nightmares and walking and laughing in my sleep I was finding it hard to get to sleep

Nothing major is bothering. There are a couple of things, but nothing serious. Maybe they are bothering me more then I think?!?! is that possible?

There is somthing you can buy in health food stores and chemists called Valerian.
But be careful, it affects people in different but its mainly to help you sleep.
If you have bipolar disorder, depression, or any other disorder, do not take it.
if not, its worth a try, and it dosent give you that hungover feeling when you wake.
Take it about 2 hours before the time you want to fall asleep at.

Check to make sure you're not too hot/cold in bed. Also avoid reading in bed before you sleep or watching tv in bed. Also, is there anything irritating you like a rash, sore throat, or sore muscles, itchiness? These can all contribute to a bad night sleep!

My bed is a little uncomfortable(recently moved house) - could that be it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭stagolee

like zapho said check your not overheating in your sleep. a huge duvet will seem just right when you get under it but by the time your body has heated it up to an uncomfortable heat you might already be a sleep.

also make sure there is decent ventilation/a window ajar in the room you sleep in

best of luck kiddo, sleep is important :)

you may have hit the nail on the head here, we spent (statistacs blah blah) one third of our lives in bed so if your bed is not comfortable i would suggest investing some money in a new matress!!

Moving house affects us more than we might think!
Agree with Sifo too about the bed. If my bed/matress is not comfortable I never get a good nights sleep
