Whats a reasonable price to expect to pay to have a dish realligned ?

I have a Sky+ system and (weather depending) some of the channels show 'No Satellite Signal is being received' so I assume my dish just needs to be realligned.

I rang a local installer today and was quoted €90 to do the job !

€90 ? surely this is a 5 minute job ? or is that acceptable ?

    €90?

i'd go out and see if i could do it myself 1st and then if you mess it up, get the engineer out to undo your work

€90 does seem a tad high but it really annoys me when people say its "only a 5 min job" Unless the installer lives next door to you it will take him a lot longer than 5 mins to get to/from you and you must also factor in equipment costs as well as fuel vehicle insurance, ladders tools etc. A spectrum analyser for example costs €1500.

Mossy is right though have a go yourself and call the installer if you have no luck.

Sorry to annoy you Tony, but I called a local installer and where I live local is less than 5 minutes. Regardless of what his equipment costs it is still a five minute job. I'd be impressed if he arrived with a €1500 spectrum anything. The guy that installed it in the first place took 40 minutes from scratch and only used one of those sat finders you find in lidl ! (so he told me).

Actually now that I think about it .. thats what I should do .. just order a new one and cancel the current subscription.

that would probably set off the alarm bells at Sky if you use the same phone number, same bank account, same address etc. etc.

Man it sure would set off alarm bells . They are gone bananas with this new CRM System (or whatever its called )they have installed . Give em a phone number now and they can instantly tell you the local area which the number relates to !

€90.00 does sound a bit pricy , but for that you should also find out if it is actually your alignment , and not cabling or or receiver problems .

I personally think myself €90 is a fair enough price. I dont hear anybody Criticising Sky's in home service charge of €108?

i bought a lidl system all in for 100€ and have found all the satellites visible from ireland with an 80cm dish.
piece of p*ss. just find out all the angles and use an easy to find sat like hotbird as your starting reference. few basic sums and away ye go.
people who call out 'experts' and pay money to do jobs for them shouldnt complain about the cost if they're not prepared to make a little effort.

I paid 70 euro last winter , thought it was a bit steep , but it was pi$$ing out and windy so there was not a chance i was getting up on the roof and messing about. There was football on that night so i needed it ASAP

I did one for a guy 2 weeks ago. Charged him €80. I had to drive 14km to get to his house and then get out on a tiled roof 4 floors up.
I think I gave him reasonable value for his money.

I think what people forget sometimes and what Tony was hinting at is that the price includes a call out fee.

Regardless of whateher a job takes 5 minutes or 55 minutes, you will still, in most cases, pay a call out fee. If a guy spends an hour getting to you and then that is an hour that must be pad for. Thats the way it is, plumbers do it, electricians do it, heck I do it for IT call outs.

Got it donerecently for €60. The guy also tied up my rather messy cables/taping etc. (I added a dual lnb myself last year), which was great, I wasn't actually at home and didn't ask him to do it.

Considering test gear, vechile overheads, Liability insurance and time to do it properly, €100 is reasonable.

    If it is professionally done.

Many Sky installers are just people that can drill holes and thus are not value for money.

If I was doing it for a living I'd charge €75 per hour from momement of leaving base...

If you have €30 to spare on a meter, a long video cable or video snder and portable TV to see "quality" you can do it your self if the dish is accessible.

If it is stupidly attached to a Chimney, don't DIY unless you used to roof work and have the gear!

Mine are on edge of a nearly flat shed roof with permenant ladder access, but then I have a fixed one that gets moved. As well as the fixed one with 3 LNBs that I hope doen't move and the motorised one that should move and doesn't right now!
