kickboxing came from full contact karate of the early 70s. and boxing techniques were added in, no leg kick then. In ireland it came in mid 70s via Yougoslavia. Geroge Canning (a ma power house in 1980s) was a wado sensi, he met a guy called Peter Mijic at a tournament, was amazed by what this fighters were doing, and went to Splitz in yougoslavia to learn. he then changed to wado to shorted stance, and boxing guard, called in Mu Gendo, but was still practiced like karate, and then it envloved into kickboxing (full contact style I refer to) as we know it today. thats what happened in ireland.

So as far as I know,it was not influenced at least in the beginning by muay thai.

The big professional kickboxing league with all pro figthers in the early 80s in USA and Canada was called Professional Karate Association or PKA, but lots of TV coverage then etc etc. Bill Wallace, Benny Uriquidez, Don Wilson ( B MA movie actor) , they were all big names then.
