Congrats to the Tomahawk Tom Haddock for kicking ass with great style yeasterday in Co. Antrim at Extreme Combat 3.
He controlled the fight with the thai clinch standing up and worked to mount as soon as it hit the floor. He pounded his opponent from there until the referee stepped in to stop the fight after three and a half minutes.

    Sweet!

How'd Francis get on? Any more boys from PBS rockin the show?

Tom did indeed rock last night! Brutal GnP, the other guy did well to stay in the fight as long as he did.

    Francis won by guillotine AFAIK

    Props to Tom!

he was fighting Johnny Shiels of the IIMMA in Ballymenagh. No other Point Blank fighters I was MC'ing. No Video evidence until the DVD comes out I am afraid.
Tim Murphy fought Mikey Young for the Featherweight title and in my opinion won the fight clearly. The decision went against him however, a decision booed by the crowd who went into chants of "Murphy! Murphy!".
Francis won by trusty guillotine after breaking the rope at the start of the match!

Yea great win by Tom and Francis
Well done to both of them

As for Tim's loss people can make up their own mind up about it when they view the video.

    IMO Tim won.

That's a shame. Tim's a good guy and a good fighter. I didn't expect these sort of politics here. Does anyone have a video of the fight?

I don't think it was politics, I think the judges were inexperienced and didn't remain as objective as they should have, though I don't think it was a conscious thing.

As for Mickey's turnover winning the third round, you could be right, though it shouldn't have of course; it was realy late in the round (like 40 seconds to go at most) and he didn't score from there at all, in fact all it did was highlight the fact that Tim had bust his nose as he started bleeding everywhere.

I agree Mark don't think it was politics.
    Just not been objective enough.

    Fierce annoying

Thanks for the kind words guys. I felt I won the fight, but I know I could have fought better as well so I'm generally annoyed all round.
Thanks to Mark and Ger and all for the support on the night.

I know judging along with reffing is a truly thankless job but I think they really need to have more experienced people doing it. Fighters put a lot of work into getting ready for fights and losing like this is a pretty big kick in the stones.

What happens if there is a draw? They go to the cards? are there judges scoring hits? Or do they look at each round seperaetly and they say who won which, who did more damage, who was more active, who had control, who went for submissions etc etc? then it's who ever has the most rounds? or is the last round more important than the first?

And the prize for the most questions in one post goes to....:D

If a match goes the distance it goes to a judges decision. The judges score each round individually using a 10 point must system familiar to most people from boxing. The emphasis on what the criteria are for winning a round varies from organisation to organisation, but AFAIK the Extreme Combat promotion scores like the UFC i.e. points are awarded for effective striking, grappling, takedowns, aggressiveness and ring control.

If it's just inexperienced reffing, than that's all it is.. Still, there is nothing worse than training for a fight, winning the fight but the judges not giving you what you deserve.

From what I've seen of Tim, he prefers to stand but is very capable on the ground.

    Hi Paddy,
I'm from a light contact Kickboxing and TKD background, started training for MMA about a year ago, so I train the usual standup clinch and ground.

Most of my fights have been a mixture of standup and ground. Against colm I obviously had a lot of respect for his ground game so just tried to keep it tight and waited for my chance to unload when we were standing. The fight against micky on sunday was largely on the ground although there was some standup.

Tim who do you have to train submission grappling with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

    Why all the questions guys?

I don't really count how often I train, lots when I've a fight coming up, not as much when I don't. I'm the grand old age of 22 and I train grappling with the same people I train everything else with, mainly people from the martial arts clubs in UL. I've a few guys down here that are coming along nicely and I'm hoping to get some of them fighting MMA soon.
