    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a home testing kit for water quality/minerals, etc?
    Thanks.

    Hi Smileygal,

You'll need to be more specific. What are you testing the water for?
Hardness (calcium), Iron, TDS (total dissolved solids) & Chlorine are the normal tests people seem to be interested in.
These test kits can be purchased from any laboratory supplier, (VWR & AGB have an online catalogue). The test kits are typically colour based, ir you add tablets into a volume of water until a colour change is observed and then multiply the number of tablets by whatever factor is on the bottle to calculate the levels present.

Or alternatively any good Aquarium shop will stock them as they are necessary for testing tank water for all the above

Thanks. It's well water and looking mainly for too much of anything, e.g iron. Chlorine no problem.

So it's ok to use an aquarium test? Never thought of that.

    Chlorine no problem?
Bleahh! I would be very concerned about chlorine especially an excess of it.
I have some strips that I got for testing aquarium tank water you dip it in to the tank and shake the excess water off, wait 60 seconds and match the colours with a provided chart, tests for Ph, Total hardness GH/TH, Carbonate hardness KH, Nitrite NO2,and Nitrate NO3.
real easy to use I haven't got an Iron test but they are available as a single test kit.

You'l also want to test for Nitrates (caused by agri run-off) and also various microbio tests.

If you're going to drink the water maybe you should consider sending the samples off to a professional testing lab - they aren't too expensive and what price health.

FOr more details of testing procedures, list of tests etc etc check out the following:
