I am gassing for those Steinberger guitars....I am ashamed. Whats the story with them? they seem pretty slick, if a bit tacky.

If you can get used to no headstock, they are the dog's bollocks.

    Tacky?
Personally I like them. They play great, stay in tune indefinitely (no kidding) and are very strongly built. The graphite neck has a fantastic feel to it, its a pleasure to pick up the guitar every time.

EDIT: The TransTrem uniquely can transpose and lock into different keys, and keeps all the strings in tune with each other when you whammy it so you can play it like a slide guitar. Can also lock the remaining strings into tune instantly if a string breaks.

Real, intelligent design has gone into the making of these guitars. IMHO Ned Steinberger is up there with Leo Fender as a guitar/bass designer and innovator.

You get fully used to having no headstock in about ten days. Before that your hand is about 2 frets further up the neck than you think. And when you go back to playing a guit with a headstock there is no need for re-adjustment. .

The downside of this guitar is that you need special strings to use the transposing features of the transtrem. They're not particularly expensive but you do have to get them off the interweb which means added postage costs and you cant pop down to the local guitar shop every time you break a string. You can buy an adaptor and use any strings but then no accurate transposing.

I have a GM7, PM me if you want any info.

You can get them here and the new Synapse models here and there's an informative user group site here
