    Civil liberties 'may be eroded'
    ===============================

    The director general of MI5 has joined the public debate on whether new measures are needed to combat terrorism by saying that civil liberties may have to be eroded to protect British citizens.

    In her first comments about July's London bombings, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller said the security services were shocked but not surprised by what happened. She made her remarks in a confidential speech in Holland, but broke with tradition by allowing the contents to be posted on MI5's website.

    We'll be talking to former Chairman of the joint Intelligence committee Dame Pauline Neville Jones.
