Thats because in your display properties, full screen video is set to output to the primary display, which is your laptop screen. You need to change the properties so that full screen output is send to the secondary display or both displays.

ok, will give this a try, not to familiar with ati drivers\controls yet but even if not in full screen mode should it now be displayed properly in the windowed wmp on the tv?

Sorry, not too familiar with ATI driver functions myself. The laptop I had the problem on had NVidia display, but I do remember the video not showing even in a window on the TV display.

It's probably going to be down to playing around with the settings of the display driver.

This is a new bug they added into media player 10.
My H/Ware setup worked perfectly, could watch AVI movies on TV until one day Media Player 9 announced 'Updates are ready....'

    Get another media player app.

    Video Lan Client (VLC) www.videolan.org

Id would say its what DuckJob was saying. To save system rescources the video is only decoded to the primary display. Fastest way to get you TV out to be primary is to switch off the laptop screen and only output to the TV. Normally you can use the function+f5 but it might be a differant key on you laptop. Should also be possible in software settings.
