im fairly novice, so i was wondering if someone could explain the diiferences between the two, which one is better for multimedia/gaming purposes. what exactly is 64bit computing(in the case of amd64) and will i need it? is there a duel core amd like the pentium d? what is the cache used for and is bigger much better?

    any info would be great

AMD64 is better for gaming. Just because of its architecture.

AMD have 'X2' series, being their dual cores. 3800+ X2 -> 4800+ X2. Dual core isn't needed just yet for games.

AMD generally offer more bang for buck, and out perform pentiums in the same price range.

AMD and Intel are two rival processor companies, personal choice on which is "better" although I lean towards AMD in terms of performance. For gaming, AMD is definetely better, Intel better for encoding purposes. 64 bit processing is the throughput of the processor, up until recently, applications and OS's have primarily been 32-bit (Windows, MS Office, pretty much any app you can think of) and have been limited as to what they can do due to the processor architechture, now with the advent of 64-bit processing, we should theoretically see the next big jump in personal computing in terms of what apps can deliver, as the processors will be able to churn out more output calculations than their 32 bit predecessors.

Yes, AMD has an extensive range of dual core processors, more than Intel in fact. Dual core processors are only good ofr you if you plan to do heavy multi tasking on your pc, other than that, no apps really take advantage of dual processors..yet.

The cache is a mini RAM like memory for the processor, stores info on processes and process state, boring stuff really...

only real reason you'd want an intel based chip is if you want to use it more for video encoding.

    AMD's are more cost effective.

You will need 64bit in the coming future.. well maybe not "need" but it will be more supported with newer operating systems. As the current windows xp 64bit project is not catching on fast enough with still bad driver support and some 32bit software not working on it and very little preformance increase.

Like AMD better but thats my opinion.
For a good list of all the type and hos the compare try here (tomshardware)
It will explain on different applications which is better and all that

if you want an unbiased review, don't read toms hardware. They wouldn't be the most reputable of review sites. Checkout ananadtech. That would be my personal favourite. Or at least read 3-4 different reviews, and average the results yourself.

It's worth noting that most modern P4s are 64bit.

64bit is rather pointless for Windows users, for the moment, to be honest. On Linux and FreeBSD you'll see considerable advantages in things like databases.

AMD (non-Socket A) chips generally have greater memory throughput than Intel chips, currently.
