Kimya Dawson (of Moldy Peaches fame)
    Strand of Oaks (K Records)
    Neosupervital

Friday September 16th, Lower Deck. €12 on the door, doors 8.30pm

    Info on the music:

    KIMYA DAWSON:
While acclaimed New York anti-folk duo MOLDY PEACHES take a hiatus,
founder member Kimya Dawson has been busier than ever, releasing four
solo albums (the lastest of which, 'Hidden Vagenda', has just been
released on K RECORDS) and touring constantly "in a mission to embrace
the whole world" and connect with as many people as possible. She is the
modern-day WOODY GUTHRIE and BILLIE HOLIDAY rolled into one. She has
recently toured with DANIEL JOHNSTON, JASON ANDERSON, SCHWERVON!, HERMAN DUNE, JEFFREY LEWIS and CALVIN JOHNSON, and shares the same playful innocence wrapped in world-weary-knowing as each of them.

Kimya's tender and often heart-breaking songs, are performed so simply
and intimately, sung through a smoker-toned tongue, that you feel as
though they are being whispered into your ear by a best friend. Like a
dream, and your mother is singing you asleep; a familiar lullaby of joy
and depair in life and of death and the world and of it's strange
beauty... The bittersweet first-love heartache of a laughter wrapped in
grief. A Kimya Dawson show is a special occasion - it's a reassurance that you
can still feel life the way you did when you were six.

    STRAND OF OAKS:
Strand of Oaks started as an idea between two friends who met in
Philadelphia. The concept of the band was to take a group of folk songs
and build them into much larger ideas. Because of this process, the
songs blend a unique mix of simplicity and color. The band consists of
three members at the present time: Tim (guitar.banjo.vocals) Greg
    (bass.guitar.keys) Thomas (drums).

    Neosupervital
If you fancy a spot of impromptu James Brownesque break dancing peppered with some beatboxing and recorder playing being proffered by a sharp suited one man electro band - Mr. Neosupervital was definitely honed for your pleasure. You may recognise Tim O'Donovan from playing drums in Island/Universal band Bell X1 but what he offers as Neosupervital is entirely different.

It all started one fine morning a while ago when he acquired his next-door neighbour's discarded guitar off his dustbin and started composing. He then progressed from the acoustic to a pc, a drum box and a synth guitar.

Think the Dandy Warhols fused with electronic beats, synths, melodic pop, driving bass, memorable lyrics, not to mention a stunning vocal range, and you're somewhere on the right track.

This is not a benefit gig, but Hive Mind Promotions will also be taking up a collection for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, to be sent to relief workers in New Orleans, who will distribute it in the community where they see the greatest need. Kimya Dawson has started a donations programme of her own, called RELIEF THROUGH MUSIC, for teenagers who have been displaced by the hurricane. Thousands of children and teenagers have lost everything, and while they need monetary donations, and basic needs like shelter and food are the dominant priority, returning some of the former quality of life these people once had is also important: music is nourishment, too. Music is central to the lives of so many young people: giving back some of their music is not just a thoughtful donation, but a sign of solidarity, a bestowing of a little bit of the dignity that must be lost when one’s entire material world has been destroyed. Some of the strongest musical traditions in the world have come out of the American south: especially in New Orleans, music is a form of nourishment necessary for cultural survival.

Kimya asks, "Please, go through your music collections and your closets and find things that are collecting dust. So many of us have upgraded our music players and lost interest in things we used to listen to…Ask your friends to donate stuff. ask local stores to donate stuff. maybe you don't have a cd player but maybe you could spare $10 to send a gift card. Ask bands you know to donate some of their albums. Ask record labels to make donations. I can't imagine being a teenager and going through tough times without my music."
