51.4% of Dutch households have broadband

Broadband penetration per household in the Netherlands increased to 51.4 percent at the end of June 2005, up 6.6 percent compared to the penetration rate at the end of 2004 (44.8 percent). The penetration per 100 inhabitants increased to 22.3 percent at the end of Q2, almost up by 50 percent from 15.9 percent a year ago and almost one percent more than in Q1, according to Telecompaper in its report Dutch Broadband 2005-H1. The total Dutch broadband market grew by 15 percent in first six months of 2005 to 3.63 million broadband connections, compared with 3.16 million at the end of 2004. Of the 474,000 new connections, 298,000 or 63 percent are ADSL and 176,100 or 37 percent are cable connections. The absolute growth of broadband connections is slowing down with Q2 being the first quarter since Q3 2003 that shows less than 285,000 additions (186,800).
Planet Internet became the first ADSL-only ISP to reach the position of large broadband ISP in the Netherlands with 491,000 customers on 30 June. Wanadoo dropped back to second place with 482,000 customers, closely followed by @home with 480,000. Based on current developments It is estimated that the Dutch broadband market will grow its customer base by 29 percent in 2005, to approximately 4 million broadband connections, representing a penetration rate of 57 percent.
