any know of anyone in the cork area who could restore an early sixties fender tremolux amp. it works but it's pretty rough to say the least. crowley's wouldn't take it.

stay away is my experience. he "set up" my spanky gibson les paul. he didn't do the intonation and the strings now buzz like a MF. he struck me as being a bit on the belligerent side. i happened to ask about tube amps in general and he said he didn't know a lot.

    What's wrong with it?

midleton. it's rough looking to begin with. it got wet at some stage in its life (probably recently). it buzzes and hisses like a mf. it's fairly corroded internally, the pots are seized. if i had ignored the advice of the electrician that gave to me and i opened it first, i wouldn't have tried plugging it in, let alone switching it on. the first thing i had to do was hoover it out!! but it did work. i've posted detailed descriptions of it's condition on an american fender amp site and everyone said that no matter how bad they are, they can always be fixed however i can't find anyone to take a look at it. if i could give it a clean bill of health i would worry about its outward condition then.

There's a good guy if you fancy a trip to Dublin, Mark Levin, his contact details are in the insrtument resources sticky.

Might be worth it if the amp has the tone :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,465 ✭✭✭✭cantdecide

it definitely has the tone. that was obvious even through the buzzing. doctorj, i'm gonna sound really dumb if was right under my nose but i can't find those details........

Yeah Mark is quite good at what he dose but he charges a hugh amount of money, about 48 quid an hour plus parts...... I wouldnt bring somthing like that to him cos it would end up costing a stupid amount. Recently i have heard of people who have been unhappy with the amount he is charging for simple enough jobs.

I've heard that Russell's on Parnell Place will give you the number of a guy in the Cork area who's apparently s**t hot at that sort of thing. Call in and ask

That alladin amps guy is a bit of a joker. I wont go into exact details as its a bit of a convoluted story but my advice is to steer clear. I have had two experiences with him, well one of the times it was in relation to my mate's amp. But anyway, avoid him.

i've brought it to a guy called noel in CP tronix on leitrim st., he worked in crowleys for years. he seems hugely knowledgeable and helpful. he's a straight talker without being rude. the only problem is that it will be another two weeks before he can even get the ball rolling. annoying when you consider i have to wait a fortnight just to find out what parts to send for from the netherlands.

    Custom22, Vox,

Can you say a bit more about why the alladin amps guy is a joker?
Did he overcharge? Did he screw up a job? Did he do things to your amp you didnt ask him to?

I've got an old pre-cbs Fender amp I need to get looked after and possibly modified. My main concern isnt price. I love this amp and I just want someone who knows his stuff (the fact that this amp was already heavily modified makes it that much trickier), will do an excellent job and use only the best possible parts. It's iffy restoring an old amp cause you might replace something that changes the sound in a way you dont want - a good amp guy will know these dangers and the ways around them.

Anyone know a guy like that?

Yikes...how did you get your hands on that?

Feylya and Doc J will vouch for me - you can send your vintage amps to me.

(and you will never see them again)

    :)

I'm doing what for you now? I thought you told me never to tell anyone about you eating vintage Fender gear...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

That's right - just tell them that i'm a good amp fixerer and that i generally dislike fender. Think they'll buy that?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Fender's are dreadful amps and guitars. Not worth a penny. I'll give you €50 for your slimline tele...

    Lol, slimline.... :p

Wait a minute, what are you implying? Something in relation to my beer tank?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Slimline... Yeah, my brain is broken. Tried some of that oak aged beer.. Brain melt. I was of course thinking of thinline.

Mmm, beer. Porterhouse ok for you ;)

"Howya, pint of Hersbrucker for me and a pint of slimline for fey, please".

Don't throw it in the bin man, i'll take it off your hands FOR FREE. :p

Seriously though, ask Eoin Madsen - this dude knows his stuff and he'll be able to help you out more than all of us put together when it comes to dissecting amps.

While we're on the subject, anyone got any good resources for fixing amps? It's something I'd like to learn.

    Also, Hoegarrden ftw!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

It's something I'd like to learn.

Plug in your amp and open up the chassis. Then, while the amp is warming up you go and have 12 Hoegaardens, then you pour some hot water over it...

Don't take any amp advice from me, fey, i think i'll stick to guitars. :p

Hmm, that's like me telling you to shove a pluged in computer power chord up your hole if you want to destaticize yourself :p

And I work in Tech Support :p
