Sound Prob

Hey all, having a problem with audio on my PC (self built - 3200+ A64, 1GB Mem, MSI K8T Neo2 mobo with onboard sound)

I have six ports on the sound part of the mobo - pink (mic) green (front) blue, black, yellow and an s/p thingy. Until recently I was just using the headphone connector on the case but the jack of the headphone snapped and is stuck in the case port. I disconnected the front audio connectors from the mobo, and now the audio section in the control panel is showing my mic working fine (in the pink rear port) but i can't hear a thing (headphones in rear green port). I thought it might be something to do with the stuck jack in the case, so disconnected everything from the interposer board behind the front bezel, no luck.

Have tried the usual, trying all of the other ports for the headphone jack, nothing. I'm thinking it's either a major hardware prob or else i've screwed up the software config. Headset is new and known good.

    Any help really appreciated :)

Ok I think what may be wrong here is that when no front panel audio connector is attached to the motherboard headers you need to place a jumper across a few of the pins in order to get sound from the rear audio outputs.
See here for the pins you need to put jumpers on.
I know that link is to an Intel page but this type of front audio connector is the most common type in use nowadays on most motherboards whether for Intel or AMD cpus. When the front panel has no headphones plugged in the front panel circuits short out these pins the same as a jumper would. When you plug in headphones at the front they break this short circuit and no sound goes to the rear audio, just the headphone socket at the front then gets sound output. This is why plugging in headphones mutes your main speakers. Your problem is that because you broke the headphones jack in the front, you cannot get sound back on the rear with the front panel connector in place as you cannot in effect 'unplug your headphones', and because you disconnected the front audio altogether there is now nothing to short those motherboard pins, hence you are also getting no sound with front panel disconnected from the motherboard. Hope you understand what I mean and that this helps.
