    Hi,

planning a Round World Trip soon and looking for good/cheap insurance deals for backpacking.

Anyone found any good deals for such insurance?

    Cheers,
    James

Trailfinders and USIT do travel insurance, and so do AIB / BOI and probably other financial institutions.

The deal I got (Trailfinders) was based on the number of continents I visited and the length of the trip. Four continents x eight months = about four hundred quid if I remember rightly.

Didn't really shop around to be honest, so I don't know if this was a good deal, but I'm looking at the forms here and it seems that pretty much every possibility was generously covered.

    Never used it, of course.

RAC are good. My sister got a good deal there a year or two ago. It was a LOT less than €400. Probably closer to €120. Im sure they have a website but there's a shop in Rathmines if you wanted to ring and ask.
USIT/trailfinders/ebookers are quite pricey, definately shop around and ul get a better deal.

Very reasonably priced, and they do a deal with pigsback.com if you're a member.

Im thinking of using fyi.ie. Got a quote of €152 for 10 months cover. Thats seems to be the best i've found anyway.

I could have sworn I included a link to Ace travel insurance in that post, was it removed or something?

Thanks a bunch for the replies!

Had already looked at Ace and they quoted and they quoted €250 upwards online.
therecklessone, from your second post, I assume you posted a link to Ace in your first... have previous policy with them, might try calling, u think they might change the remainder of my annual policy to a backpacker policy?

Trailfinders were looking for €500 approx, both quotes for 12month trip.

Rac sound promising, Grem, how long was your sister's trip?

Worth a try, the worse they can only say no.

For my seven week trip they were easily the cheapest I could get, I think I paid €70+ when Trailfinders wanted €190!!!

Sorry James1234 i am mistaken in saying RAC do travel insurance. They do it but you have to be a citizen of the UK, apparently they dont do it in Ireland. My sister was obviously delusional when she said she got it there. Or perhaps they did it 2 years ago and stopped...
    Anyway sorry bout that!

I took out a two-year policy with Coverworks (via Visas Australia, Dublin) for c.€620 in Jan 2004. (included the US and Canada, hence the higher price)

Part of their policy was to give you a part-refund if you returned home early for any reason.
Well, I returned home earlier than planned and I can tell you I had a hell of a job getting my refund from them !

It took 4 lenghty letters and a complaint to the UK Ombudsman to get my money back!!

I can only imagine what it would have taken to get them to pay out in the event of an actual claim on my policy

    Draw you own conclusions.

    Happy travels !

    Silvera.

I would definitely recommend FYI.... Cheap and good insurance...

I've used them a few times and have had no issues with them. Cant go wrong with that.

This is who I have my insurance with out here. But as mentioned above the underwriters of this insurance are coverworks/cega. And the only time they seem to pay out without and fuss is for a serious injury. Now touch wood you dont need it. But I injured my neck out here 2 months ago and had to put it on the credit card and am still waiting for the cheque to reach my home in Ireland......

Its cheap and handy assuming you dont need to claim. If you have VHI extend your policy to worldwide cover and you won't go wrong :)
