    Hey folks,

Anyone have any recommendations for this (preferably freeware or cheap :)) as from all I've read it's not that easy... Not using Exhange here you see.

Ideally I'd want to be able to set it up to backup all the users mail/data on say a weekly basis to a folder on the server.

    Thanks in advance

so, you're not using exchange, just pop3 mailboxes?

then why not just move the users PST's onto the server and do regular backups of the server to tape or whatever your current backup method is?

outlook doesn't care where the mail file is, so I don't see a problem.

we currently have over 1000 users with PST files stored on a server in addition to their exchange mailboxes, so it's not that much (apart from the exchange thing ;)) different than you would have it.

Sounds easy enough - just the PST files then? What about preferences/account settings etc?

Sorry for the (possibly silly) questions. I'm too used to Notes ya see where you just backup the entire Data folder :)

preferences are stored in a couple of different files.

has more info on what you need to backup.

you might be able to find a free file/folder sync utility to keep a server copy up to date with the local files if you wanted to do it that way.

or you might be able to find out where in the registry outlook stores the path for the files it uses and change that to point to the server.

I'm guessing though that whichever way you go there's going to be a fair bit of manual work involved unless someone has a better solution that involves a clever little freeware app to do everything for you.

thinking about it, depending on your setup, you could implement roaming profiles if you had the server storage space and network bandwidth for it. that would take care of all your problems in one go.

again, it's quite a bit of work to set up, but once it's done you're all set.
