    Can someone who has the reading list or has gone through first year please tell me what books are on the list. I've been given a list of first year books by a private college and I'd like to compare the two lists. Where is the best/cheapest place to buy new and secondhand textbooks and what books do you consider essential to own and not just read.

    I don't know about an overall list; I think the lecturers will each tell you in one of the early lectures what you should read and buy and so on. Personally, I'd recommend:

    * Kelly, "The Irish Constitution"
    * MacMahon & Binchy, "The Irish Law of Torts"
    * Byrne & McCutcheon, "The Irish Legal System"
    I'm not sure about Criminal.

    Law books are exceptionally expensive, so you may or may not buy any. They have them in the library, if you don't, though I find it's easier to study if you can highlight and stuff in your own copy. Check out the year each book you're thinking of buying was published. If it's a couple of years old maybe you can get one second hand (but don't buy an old edition unawares). Sometimes people put up notices in the Law School advertising books. You could check out the SU bookshop in House 6 too, to see if it has anything you're looking for. If you're going to do this, maybe you should have a look before the start of term.

    I'd agree with what Sisu says- in terms of Criminal Law Hanley's Criminal Law I think is an excellent book.

    I have just bought a copy of Smith and Hogan's Criminal Law was only 99p ( but the bloody postage is £8.80) What number is the latest edition. The one I bought is eight edition but I think it's up to twelve now does this really matter? I would think the basic bits of the book are the same and since it's an English text I'm not sure it would matter that muc. Anyone have this book or any advice on whether I wasted my money buying an old one.

    I wouldn't say it'll be useless. It should complement what you'll get from a current Irish book, and might be particularly useful for general principles. You will need to be cautious about relying on it though, because it is both from a different jurisdiction and a few years old.

    The book is from 2002 so it won't be that outdated. My course allows me to take certain extra modules which allow me to become qualified both here and in england so I suppose it'll be useful.
