Hey, have a friend who's buying a Server from Dell on the cheap,
but i'm figuring that although it'll be good n' all but it won't live up to the super specs it has with a non-Server OS on it, and that server's aren't meant for usual desktop style funtionality.

So is this fair to say?

drivers could also be a problem... especially for any RAID cards etc

Could have major issues. If its x86 Intel you will probably get windows on there.

If its Alpha,Sparc .... You will probably be looking at Linux

Dell don't ship servers with Alphas or Sparcs...

No. If its a single-processor machine, there will be very little to choose from between the Windows variants. If its a dual-processor machine, you'll be needing at least 2000 Professional or (at the very minimum NT4 Server) on there.

Drivers will only be a problem with older operating systems, you should have no problem with anything after Windows 2000, even then if its a cheap Dell it will only ship with onboard RAID controllers, one disk (SATA) and a plonky bit of memory... it will come with Dells OpenManage software, that will only work with Server-based software... if its being used as a desktop OopenManage will never be used.
