Kind of sucks it has a Celeron however for that price don't see it getting anything better :(
Damn shame it doesn't have wireless, wouldn't be a bad kit otherwise

You'd be better of dropping out to PC world - They're clearing out laptop stocks at the moment - I bought 3 different machines (1 for me, 2 for friends) there a few weeks back....Decent kit too for what you'd pay - Anything from 600 upwards

    Celeron M!

I needed a cheap laptop so I got this , I have been looking and this is the best deal I have seen , I dont trust PCworld , so I went to Tescos !!

Laptop is not quite the one shown in the above link , its a Celeron M 330 which runs at 1.4GHz.
It has 3 USB ports , one TV out port , One VGA out , One type II cardbus Slot ( PCMCIA) and a Sony DVDRW , sound connectors on front for external speakers or headphones.
    There are no other ports

It has 256MB ram ( not 512 as posted ) however it uses So-DIMM DDR and 512MB from Komplett is 80 if you need to upgrade.

It has no wireless, but a 40 euro usb dongle from 3com ( available of komplett ) would sort that out.
It comes with microsoft works 8 , a driver disk , and an OEM version of windows XP SP2, that means you get no XP disk , there is a hidden partition containing a recovery image on the hard drive , this can be burned to disk.

The screen is 15.4 ( I think ) widescreen , and has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 , the graphics are intel xtreme onboard and take 32 MB of the system memory. There are no physical buttons for adjusting the screen , its all done with function buttons , the manual explaining this is in PDF form on the driver disk supplied. The screen is nice and bright and has a good contrast.

There is no floppy , your only input is the DVD, or usb devices. The DVD comes with a complete Cyberlink / Power DVD suite , including power2go DVD and CD writing software. ( this is not quite nero , but is very easy to use and quite reliable.) PowerDVD is an excellent DVD player.

antivirus is Computer associates "Etrust" , free for 90 days , after that you can subscribe or change to another!!

Watched a bit of Animatrix on it , There was no screen tearing and the picture was fine. ( Until the battery started beeping at me and then it slowed a bit ! ..but thats normal !! )

You get one year warranty , Iqon are based in Ireland , there is 24 hour telephone support.

It has a good solid feel , its light enough , and the battery lasts approx 2.5 hours. All in all , for the money its quite good. The best match I have seen is an ACER model from Komplett and thats almost 70 euro more expensive for almost exactly the same spec.

This is quite a good deal with a good support package. You wont be playing games on it but for say , someone going to college , or for business and surfing , its fine.

At 699 euros you not really going to do much better , I would have to rate this as very good !

acer sempron: off the powercity website.

    ACER ....€ 699.95
    Producer Recycling Fund
    EMC Included € 0.00
    Excluding EMC € 699.95
    ACER AMD SEMPRON 2800+ PROC
    15" SCREEN
    WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION
    256MB MEMORY 60GB HDD
    CDRW - DVD COMBO
WIRED LAN , MODEM , MSWORKS
    64MB SHARED VGA GRAPHICS

seems to have more gfx memory, larger hard disk, better clock speed?, but no dvd-rw, doesnt mention wireless lan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,402 ✭✭✭andy1249

The acer GFX memory is shared ,as in the iqon , that means onboard graphics , how much shared memory is set in the bios , usually 32 or 64 , Sempron 2800 is approx equivalent to celeron M 330 , might be about 1.5 ghz instead of 1.4 ,

For me the DVD writer was important , so that was the clincher but both machines look very respectable ,

All in all the specs are very close , price is same , would recommend both !! Are you closer to a power city or a tescos ?

my company resells and supports Iqon Pc's. Their impressive computers, I havent had one die on me in 3 yrs of installing & supporting them, although little problems here and there have been fixed under warranty no problem. I would deffo recommend them if anyone is thinking of buying Iqon. Their based in Dundalk

Dell currently have a laptop on offer for € 609 including delivery ... spec looks comparable to the machines mentioned here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

Sempron 2800 is approx equivalent to celeron M 330

Granted the M330 is loosly based on the Tutalin core and "should" do more work per clock cycle, but in terms of performance, the Sempron would wipe the floor with the Cellie!

Power consumption of course is another matter, but the M330 is nowhere near ballpark in performance of the 2800

the dell laptop hes on about is here
its got 512 ram and a 1.4GHz cel m processor
    dvd isnt a writer though
oh and you get a free printer :P

some other good deals going atm on the dell site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 946 ✭✭✭XDA

Note that on the Dell site you have to reduce the warranty to 90-day collect and return to get the 609 price. You can get it for 669 with a 1 year warranty.

    Regards

    XDA

They had the same offer on the site last week but without the printer.
Without it they were around 65€ cheaper so wouldn't call it a free printer

I had a look at this in Power city and as far as i remember it has built in wireless G

I would go with the Sempron 2800 rather than the Celeron

My brother bought a laptop a couple of weeks back.

I was all set to recommend the PowerCity ACER until I saw this:
    http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk/asp/spec.asp?V_ID=7016

Check out the battery life only 1.5 hours. What is the point of having a laptop if you have to keep it plugeed in all the time????

In the end he bought the Tesco machine and is well pleased with it.
