Just wondering what distance from the computer I can use a standard cordless set from creative or logitech? They don't seem to have it listed as part of their specs. Cheers

Not as far as u would think actually. I bought a fairly top of the line Microsoft set with keyboard and mouse, was not cheap and it bairly manages 1.5 metres  . Was a bit dissapointed, but i bought a USB extension cable for the receiver so that i could place it closer to them :).

I was just about to say I just bought a microsoft wireless optical desktop 1000 (got it cheap) and I reckon 3 or 4 feet is max ....but I have a wireless mouse from logitech that managed 8 to 10 feet (that the microsoft set was supposed to replace)

Yes, most of them work over pathetically short distances, as I found out when I got one to control a PC hooked up to a TV. 1.5m sounds about right. Replaced with an infrared keyboard instead.

I have the Logitech MX3100 Mouse & Keyboard combo. I spilt tea on the arm rest of the keyboard last week. Took it into the next room to dry it off, rubbed the keys and I could hear the computer beeping at the random input.

So it's more than 1.5m for me.

Remember that where you place your RF receiver can dramatically effect the range. Try keep it away from the speakers, monitor or other power sources. My logitechs have a range of up to 15 feet.

USB extension should work, fine, i use 1 for my HTPC in the lounge. I have it setup up so the receiver is actually sitting right behind the couch and it works well :).
