Do I need an upgrade?

I'd like to get opinions on wether or not I should upgrade my computer for future games (Oblivion for example). I'm pretty technical minded and love building computers and such but since I upgraded to this pc I've lost touch as to the latest hardware. I thinking of either upgrading, or saving the money to get an xbox 360, or possibly a PSP (input on this is appreciated!). I built this from scratch last summer, so it's only a year old, but back then it was pretty much top of the line, here's the specs:

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
    MSI K8T Neo-FSR motherboard
    1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM
    Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card
    120GB SATA hard drive

I knew this would keep me going for a while, and I have no complaints with it thus far. However with games like Oblivion and others around the corner, I'm debating wether I need an upgrade. I don't think I'll go the whole hog and upgrade everything, but I was wondering if some of you could tell me what the current top line hardware on the market is. Maybe I should go with a new graphics card?

Again my main dilema now is I either upgrade the pc a bit, buy an xbox 360 when its out or buy a new PSP. Any advice?

thats a fairly good computer and i dont think u need an upgrade but if u did want to an X800XL or a 6800gt (which i think its now been taken off the market in agp) wouldnt go astray and would b nice for running oblivion which will play nicely on a pc and have mods :D
i would personaly wait till the next new type of skt comes out and skip 939 then get a new mobo/cpu/ram and a pci-e graphics card

I have almost exactly the same rig , built it last may , now as you know there is probably nothing out there at the moment in terms of games that your rig will struggle with , so I would say that you dont need to upgrade just yet.
If you were to upgrade though , what you would need is the following ,

A new motherboard processor and ram , cos things have moved on and the standard now is socket 939 with PCI express. ( you may get away without the ram, but the latest graphics must have a PCI-e slot.

And a X800xl or X850xl card for the best in graphics at the moment.

But keep in mind that your rig is perfectly acceptable as is and unless you absolutely must have the latest gear I'd spend my money on something else !

I'd save your money until you actually /need/ to upgrade. What you have is a perfectly adequate machine IMO (though I don't know of Oblivion).

There is no such thing as future-proof.
A component that costs €300 now will be €200 in six months and €70-€100 in 18 months.

€40 - €50 or so seems to be the bottom-out price for most PC stuff.

Best value for money is to upgrade to the previous year's new stuff, and only when you have to have it.

I agree with gurgle... there is no such thing as "future proof". Although aparently there is some interesting stuff on the horizon... dual core, Intels new VIIV processor, etc... all should be available within the next few months. http://news.com.com/Intel+details+new+brand+for+entertainment+PCs/2100-1041_3-5842745.html

And btw, the PSP is beautiful. lovely, and soooooooo amazing I just want to run away to a desert island and get married to it immediatly... Get one now!!!
