Does such a thing exist? The boss is bothering me about sourcing one but I can't seem to find much on the web and he says he tried Peats and they didn't have a clue.

Never heard of one... and doubting the possibility of their existence.
Tell your boss not to be such a tight-ass and buy either a firewire card or a usb hub.

if they did exist ,(which afaik they don't) they would cost far more then the new firewire or usb card.....

OK, firewire card it is. He owns a dell and has next to no technical experience so I'm just hoping I don't get roped in to fit the damn thing. Cheers lads.

the best you can do is a usb hub that has firewire on it too. available in maplin

A USB hub with firewire will still need to be connected to a firewire port on the computer, there is no conversion/relation between the two in the hub (e.g. needs two wires running to the computer, one USB, one firewire.)

He wants to use a firewire device with a USB port or a USB device with a firewire port ?

Or he doesn't know the **** from the shovel and wants to blame somebody ?

Firewire device with a USB port. He knows next to nothing about IT stuff but will not stop asking me about it.

Just tell him they're two different technologies.
Like trying to play a CD in a cassette deck.
Oh and call him a tight-wad.

    Firewire card is about €20

Tell him the card is the adaptor he needs for his firewire devices to acces the PC's USB network.

(Charge him €80 for it, then offer to put it in his PC for free as a favour ;) )

noi it wont. there is definitely a hub in maplin that has four or so usb ports and also a firewire port. then a cable comes out of it and plugs into the usb port. not firewire needed. its 32.99

a pci firewire card will also work

    Here's a cable here .. http://www.pixela-1.com/capycable.htm

Not something you'll find in a shop though, and they'll cost a pretty packet.

    Try something like this instead.

I severely doubt it :D ... That other cable isn't a generic Firewire-USB cable, I think it seems to do hardware MPEG2 encoding on the DV stream in the middle bit, e.g. it wouldn't actually work to plug in a firewire hard disk for example.
