my dad nearly had a heart attack when he realised he was only one number off winning 4 million in the Irish lotto  . He thought it must be a nice packet(which it was), but not the packet he was expecting! He won 937 euro, now i must say he is delighted, but one more number would have changed his life!!

i know this must happen every week but do you think 5 numbers deserves more than 900 euro??!!

This has bothered me for a while.
I notice even in the Euromillions with such a high jackpot-the prizes for getting one number less are considerably smaller.
The way they work out the "lower" prizes is based on the number of winners.
So if there were only 2 people in the country who got 5 numbers I would think the money they would get would be considerably higher.
Sadly it looks in your fathers case that there were a lot of 5 number winners most likely because a lot of people played that week and hence he didnt get as much as he would have otherwise.
I do think that the difference between 5 and 6 number prizes is far too great but I suppose the national lottery have to cover them selves in the event that there are a lot of five number winners.

oh yeah, all that hard work and effort picking those 5 lucky numbers... I mean, you sure "deserve" a lot more :p
If you look at the stats, 131 other people matches 5 numbers.
Each got €974 - total given away just over €127k.
    There's a higher prize for 5+bonus.
So, simply put, due to statistics and the prize sharing, thats all you're due.
    Enjoy it! :D

ok smartass :p !!! i didnt say I deserve more, i said "5 numbers", and i know its all down to stats but it just seems rediculous with that jackpot and our population.....anyway im sticking to euromillions!!! I won 27 euro 2 weeks ago and only needed 2+1 lucky star!!

Its to stop Syndicates. They don't make money from winning the main prize but from all the other numbers.

    yeah, its harsh enough.
I'd be well pished if I got 5 numbers, only to think its just short of a grand.
I'd always think I'd get enough for a car or something, but thats really 5 + bonus.
Highest I got was 4 + bonus and just got €100.
I guess I'd be chuffed getting anything though once I realised it.

Try again Wednesday. You can have the 5+bonus..... sorry, but I'm having the jackpot! :D

He shouldve done it in a bookies,
    50,000/1 - pick 5 from 6
    25,000/1 - pick 5 from 7

It really doesn't sound like much.

I'd be kicking myself if i got five. Would you not be saying, 'if only' for the next 25 years.

I think they should take more out of the main prize and put it into five number prizes as it get bigger.

Yes I was a bit peeved but then i saw that the winners got €450,000 there were four of them so if you thought you were going to get €2m and then only got a quarter of that I would be even more upset I think ;)

My dad got 5 numbers & the bonus about 2 years ago & got €12k.
The lotto at the time was a few million, twas a real kick in teeth to get 6 numbers, just not THE 6!
He was still really happy with his win though...

So did that win pay for all the money he has spent in his life on the lotto? I bet he's still down :(

Not sure if that was directed at me, or the initial poster, but we worked out from what i can remember, that my dad had spent around 6k on the lotto since it started, so he definately made money on it. He's always winning small amounts on it too, wish it'd rub off on me!

We did a syndicate in work the other day for the euromillions - put in €50, won €56! Woohoo!

I reckon they should scrap everything but the jackpot and hence have a much bigger one. That way people would never be disappointed with gettin less than they thought they would for 5 numbers.
