ESB Questions

Has anyone ever had to pay a security deposit to ESB when they register with them? I moved into my place on July 27th. Two weeks ago the landlord texted me to say that "I need to register with ESB urgently or I'll be cut off".

When I called ESB I was told that as part of the registration of the apartment, I have to either agree to pay the ESB bill by Direct Debit or pay a security deposit of €150 which is redeemable after 14 months.

In the last place I lived, we didn't have to pay this deposit and I've never heard of it before. Is this normal? There's also a problem in that the previous tenant paid until July 11th, I moved in on the 27th but they won't start the meter afresh from the 27th, I'll have to pay from the 11th which I don't think is fair. Any advice on this is appreciated.

The ESB demanded this from myself as well when I moved into my new place. Just ring them up and tell them that you had an account with them before. Tell them where it was and the name on the account as well as the account number.
