preview cards

i thought it would be a good i dea to have one single thread for discussion of all ravnica preview cards, so here it is!

Todays (monday 5th) is selesnya guildmage

im not always the best judge of cards, but this little guy looks handy enough. g/w g/w for a 2/2 is ok enough (a slightly worse grizzly bears if nothing else) but it has those 2 abilities, neither of which are spectacular, but both handy. id see him be more useful in limited, especially towards the late game where chump blockers and/or pumping could help alot and youll have the mana available for multiple activations. any other opinions.

this guy is great value for mana. solid 2/2 for 2 and very useful abilities, automatic inclusion in a green limited deck for me.

+1/+1 to all creatures you control is quite powerful, especially when combined with the ability to create creatures.

His multicoloured thingy, is pretty weird and is just going to get confusing to new players. However, I like him. Should be alot of fun and I look forward to the similar bunch from other colours

i missed the other preview card earlier in the "life in the big city" article. Agrus Kos looks quite good. of recent cards, he reminds me most of nagao, bound by honour. he has a worse version of bushido, and confers a nice advantage. best in aggressive decks obviously, and again a nice limited card i think

Today (Tuesday 6th) gives us Carven Caryatid (say it out loud, it sounds nice). a REALLY REALLY nice limited card i think. it may have fit well into the likes of tooth and nail or beacon green, but theyre RIP now so oh well. pairs nicely with stampeding serow.

I like the Selesnya Guildmage! Pity I don't like green-white that much.... I can't wait to see the Dimir, Golgari, Simic, Orzhov, Azorius... Actually every equivlent except the Borus and the Gruul.

Are you sure the Guildmage is still being included? According to the preview text so far, the Hydrid mechanic got cut:

"Traditional multicolor and hybrid were causing too much confusion between them. One of them had to go. And being that this was the multicolor set, the decision was pretty easy. Bye bye Hybrid."

Yes but they previewed it and showed art for it! And anyway a host of them have leaked through on mtg salvation anyway.

No, that's only MaRo giving an exciting plot to the development of Ravnica. One of his better articles i think.

Anyway, getting away from all of the Selesnya G/W guys that no-one wants anyway, what about this thing:

Absolutely amazing card. Its splashable, its instant it lets you dig 3 cards and take one straight away, take another on your next draw step (which is almost straight away cos you'll be using this baby at your opponents End of Turn) and it lets you get rid of a potentially fun ruining card as well. All for 1U, NOICE

Yes, me likes Telling Time, just the ticket blue needs to get back into the old days when brainstorm ruled supreme. and yes, the woman on telling time looks uncannily like the jushi in Time Stop (woad abound). anyway, onto the latest preview card:

Perplex 1UB
Counter target spell unless its controller discards his or her hand

Transmute 1UB

Put simply, this card is AMAZING. i think it gives UB a real shot at making tier one as a hand/board control deck. either way, you win. if your opponents spell resolves, you gain massive hand advantage. if you counter the spell, you get rid of his threats. its a win/win situation. Add to this the Transmute ability, which, if required can search for such tools as:

Hypnotic Spectre
Phyrexian arena
Kira, Great Glass Spinner
Rend Flesh/Spirit
Horobi's whisper
Toshiro
Dark Banishing
Royal Assassin
Temporal Adept
Honour-Worn Shaku

add to THAT the fact that this bombalicious little card is common and you've got one hell of a powerhouse on your hands. cant wait to see what effect this has on the new standard

transmute is an amazing ability. by paying the transmute cost of a card, instead of playing it you can discard it to search for a card of the same converted mana cost, so perplex can search your deck for any card with CMC of 3. imagine in extended in UB psychatog decks, perplex can search for:

Pyschatog
Engineered Plague
Cunning Wish
Intuition
