Related to another thread but just wondering what the opportunities for progressing in a software career would be for someone starting in this area?

As I understand this is not the ideal place to start for someone wishing to go into the technical side i.e. development?

    What about the business side?

it kinda depends on what software quality assurance means for the given company. if you are developing the test cases well that could be seen as development (but not the development you were thinking of! :) )

i think it depends on the company....in some cases the role could be used as a stepping stone to development work....but it would depend on the type of company.

    any particular company in mind?

I went from Software QA to Software Performance Analysis last year. And now I'm going to go to college again.

So, yes, it's very possible. When I went from QA to Performance Analysis, 3 of us made the move, and the fourth guy on the team came from Localisation. It was a pretty hairy first few months, but after that all was well

I started in QA when I left college (computer science.)

QA roles vary greatly. In Oracle I worked close with the developers and I had the opportunity to become a developer. In Microsoft I may as well have been in McDonalds. The least technical job I've ever had. I then worked for one small company, where I started as QA and then progressed to Developer and Network Admin.

    So my advice -

QA is a great way to start your IT career - it's gentle, it's not that hard, and if you're in the right company you'll progress nicely.

It really does depend on the company though.
