Help needed - ethernet on win98 - pc rebooting

    Hi all,

Hopefully a quick(ish) solution. Bought an ethernet adaptor for my old pc to connect my modem via ethernet for my wireless router so I could finally connect my newer pc to the internet.

Old pc is running windows 98. I actually tried two ethernet cards, but the first one wasn't appearing in systems devices, so installed another one. When I go to command prompt and type ipconfig, I can see two ethernet addresses, one with all 0.0.0.0's and the other with proper addresses.

Problem is, when older pc is connected via ethernet and I click on internet explorer, the whole pc just reboots. I've tried everything, usb works fine, but can only connect one system at a time, ethernet to wireless router and I can access internet from newer pc, older pc will only work with usb.

Any ideas? Somone told me it might be a confict with the drivers from the two ethernet cards? I don't know, only one appears in system devices

Not sure but you should be able to go into safe mode by pressing F8 at bootup, going into safe mode and system devices. The second adaptor should be listed, just press the disable box.and reboot.

    regards kieran

    Thanks Kieran,
That's solved the ethernet adaptor issue, there were three usb cable modem adaptors in there so I turned all of them off to see what happened. When I do ipconfig now I'm getting one ethernet adaptor with my ip address, a subnet mask, but no default gatemay, and no pings working saying host not recognised or something.
I think I may need to get in touch with ntl to get some settings from them for the ethernet settings? They were closed last night, might try this evening. There's nothing in there so don't know what to do. When I connect my modem to the wireless router my pc with xp picks up everything and configures all the settings to connect with the modem? Does Win 98 not do all these automatically?
    Cheers

Checked it this evening and it's back to its old trick of rebooting a split second after any information is passed through the connection. The pc runs fine until you go to go on the Internet or ping something. There's no other adaptors enabled now, the ethernet is the only one and keeps rebooting. Any ideas?
