Mac Mini Hardware Trouble?

    The scenario

I wanted too charge my iPod so I turned on my Mac Mini, it got as far as the Login Screen and I left it at that, several hours later my iPod had charged I tried to login but my Mac looked like it had crashed, (there was the Beach ball spinning on the screen and I couldn’t do anything, it was like this for more than 10 mins) so I decided to hard boot the machine. Now anytime I start my Mac it will only display a grey coloured screen. I tried to insert the disk that came with OS X to check for hardware failure but when I try this, all I get is a blue screen with 2 icons and a mouse cursor on it (one icon looks like a refresh button the other is a continue arrow) after several seconds on this screen it freezes so I need to hard boot the machine again. I’ve no Idea what’s going on here so any help is very much appreciated.

    Update:

after almost 2days for wondering wtf was going on, i decide to try and take my mac mini apart, after one unsuccessful attempt I said fu*k it ill try again after lunch so I put the power, mouse/keyboard/VGA cables back in the mac turned it on and it worked. I can only imagine that it was a loose connection that I somehow miraculously knocked back into place.

Would be interested to here if anyone can offer a better reason as to why it just started to work again.
