transferring thru usb is a nightmare, for some reason its really hard to do. I tried it befoe and gave up. Best bet is to go via ethernet if both pc's have it or just burn to cd

Another possibility is if both machines have firewire (IEEE1394) you can use this to network them, although not all machines have this so ethernet is still the most likely method.

USB is not designed for communications transport. It is for the addition of peripherals, hence the name Universal Serial Bus and was introduced to allow higher speed connections and other goodies such as plug n play than the old serial bus standard. To share files across systems then two cheapo nic cards and a cross over cable will do the job.

Edit: Having said that you could use a digital camera or usb hard drive to copy files up to and then connect it over onto the destination system.
