Just saw on Sky News tv a few minutes tonight....

the news presenter was showing a page from tomorrows paper about the estimated tens of thousands of lives lost in the new Orleans flood... then moved on to another paper showing Britains Ugliest dog.

So lets create a poll on topics more interesting that sop many lives lost...
How about the number of blue cars you seen today?

Wrong ! the cost of living is actually quite close to UK£1.5Million, that is the amount of money the average person will go through in their lives, so take 1,000 dead = UK£1.5billion lost to the economy. It all about economics people. Am i the only one here who seems to notice that african-americans seem to be much worse affected in the Katrina Disaster than their counterparts ?

Not really no. The city is 70% black. But I will tell ya, they allways sell the cheap marshy low lands to the poor.

The african american community is the majority in N.O. & Kanye West's comments yesterday were way out of line.... granted the media were out line only showing african american looters & white ppl stealing food, but whatever the case - this is some serious **** for the U.S. to deal with & Bush is gonna have his ass handed to him over it & whether Kanye's comments are taken seriously or not, the images on TV will only support his comments & hurt the Republican Party who were given a boost in the last election by minority groups, especially from the African American community......

I think the term you're looking for is Human Capital, not cost of living (something totally different).
In industrialised countries, most studies come up with a value of $5m–10m.
(This also includes knock-on effects as well as earning capacity).
However, it's highly likely that the majority of those who have perished are from lower socio-economic groups, as they couldnt afford to evacuate / had nowhere to go - therefore would have a lower than average human capital calculation.
And no, you're not the only one to notice "african-americans" seem to be much worse effected.
Nearly every media report is highlighting this.
Unfortunately, they represent the majority of the poorest group in New Orleans.

surely if the dog was so important it would have been the news story on before the flood story.

also, what would you suggest the news people follow the story of the flood with?

perhaps the could make up a few rapes and murders, you know, just to sort of act as a middle range depressing story before the last item, which is usually some sort of humourous or cheerful piece?

or perhaps we should just all be forced to witness the goings on over there 24 hours a day?

    waht do you think?

what I think and the reason it Struck me to write about it was nothing about a humourous piece following but the newsreaders Change in reaction was so incredibly flippant that it stunned me. It's one thing to add a bright news story but another to completely demonstrate that you dont give a **** about thousands of Lives few away.

I reckon if that guy had lost €25 he might not have been so happy about an ugly dog.
