i know im an eejit..well i dont really want to play high end games just normal ones really such as the sims 2 or age of empires 3 when it comes out stuff like that..my computer has 64 mb max intergrated already so will that play good stuff or what?

    Simply answer no.

Well, no them Intergrated Graphics won't play ****... Adding a PCI 5200 Won't boost alot more either, PCI slot's really are slow and will decrease overall system performance. Also, the fact that your CPU is a celeron isn't gonig to help. So there's atleast 2 bottleneck's, 1 = PCI, 2=CPU... So even if youre celeron did have a AGP slot and you put in a 6600GT We will say for example.. It will not play games as well as it should simply because Celeron's aren't gaming CPU's. So adding a FX5200 Will boost your Overall performance but unfortunetly, Most probably wouldn't play any games, well latests games at all.. So IMO, You should of waited and bought a sempron setup instead, They are alot better for gaming and are Quite cheap.

    That's just my input,

    Hj

well no in the short answer and... no in the long man... You can get this smelly PCI card for graphics, but I don't know about its quality in comparison to AGP/PCI-Express cards... Why don't you just buy a new Mainboard?. Decent ones go for the 120 squid mark..

you could sell it ASAP and maybe get someone to give you what you paid for it. but maybe you'd have to take a small hit to get shot of it.

then go get a better machine. assuming there's no huge financial restraints for an upgrade.

They still make motherboards without an AGP slot ?
    Where ?

    Oh Dear!
Ya could go to maplins and get an AGP slot and try solder it in (not advisable unless your real handy with computer mobos)
Send the Mobo back say there was a fault and you want to exchange it!

    In Nightmare Land (aka Dell)

Damn dude, you just make a fair gonads of your plans to play games! :(
I am assuming you have actually looked and confirmed that their is no expansion slot for graphics (other than PCI which is pointless - AGP and PCI-Express are the only graphics slots worth bothering with, and if it is a Dell 2400 or 3000 don't bother looking, it won't be there in those models anyway). PCI graphics cards cost more than the AGP equivalent and perform far worse. The only cards available for PCI nowadays anyway are crud like Geforce FX5200 or Radeon 9200SE which wouldn't have been good gaming cards by the standards of 4 years ago, not to mind nowadays.
As I see it you have 3 options:
1: Live on with this dismal machine as it is but accept that your gaming won't extend very far beyond Solitaire and Minesweeper. Whether it's 64MB or 4 Gigabytes on those integrated graphics it doesn't matter, piling more stuff into the cart doesn't help if you have a three legged mule between the shafts.
2: The best thing to do would be to return the machine if possible or if not sell it to someone who isn't looking for a games machine and get as much as you can get back. Then invest it in a more capable machine.
3: Get someone who knows their stuff to rip the guts out of this machine and replace the motherboard with one that allows you to fit a proper graphics card like a 6600GT or similar. Other components like hard drives and dvdwriter may be reused though you may want to consider going for a Sempron or Athlon64 cpu and suitable motherboard and ram, rather than sticking with a Celeron.

Dell do it, they leave it blank... It looks like the solder is there to put the slot in, my gfs dell is the same

Have an older 2400 that i use for the web only. Bought it in my less Pc knowledge days :o
It will play COD,MOH and stuff like that but anything else forget it.
See the pic for a blank AGP slot

There is a bit more than just the slot missing though lads. I did a bit of research into the viabilty of this, cos I have a contact who can do stuff like this. Anyway on closer inspection it seems there are a lot of little components missing as well as the slot itself, and soldering in a slot just isn't viable, as you would need to add dozens of other bits and know all their values as well.
I use a machine with an old 2400 mobo as a download machine that I leave on overnight or for days on end sometimes (only the board and psu is Dell - inherited from someone in Iggy's situation - all the rest made up with an old P4 1.8 and other bits I had laying around gathering dust). Perfect for that kind of job but for gaming, not a hope.

    Thats what i'd do :D
Its the quick n easy solution, then get store credit and get something better!

If the case takes a standard ATX-sized motherboard, it should be possible to upgrade the motherboard for under €80 (the PSU would possibly have to be done aswell). Then you could pick up a halfway decent AGP card for probably about €120 ish. Thats the cheapest way you could hope to play games on it.

Most of the Dell cases have differnt mounting holes for the spacers?
Just bought a Tap&Die set so was thinking of using a a bit of perspex as a convertor plate and hopefully using the old 8200 case i have as that is easy to mod iv read!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,541 ✭✭✭duridian

Some Dells are moddable easily enough eg. the 2400 is quite straight forward (hence I was also able to use the 2400 board in another case). If they open by just pushing down a know at the rear of and sliding back the side panel like the 2400 and the 4600 it should be ok. The ones which open by going out in a V shape, hingeing from the front, I have found to be the more difficult modders. Mind you with enough will and a grinding tool anything can be achieved. Frontpanel connections on the 'Vees' tend to be more complex as well.

actually just had a google for pics of the 8200. Although it looks like it hinges from the front, it does seem to have the type of I/O shield which just pushes out (as opposed to the type that you need a Dremel to cut out) which is a promising sign from what i've seen of ripped up Dells. If you are lucky it may even have mounting holes in the standard atx positions.

I could solder an AGP connector in there, easy.
Is there space for a card in the case?
