Sharing Broadband over WiFi

My uncle has gotten broadband and I would like to share his connection, with his permission. He lives about 200m up the road from me, the room that he has his computer in faces west as does my room. I do not know what type of modem that he has but I assume it is a eth/usb modem from either Eircom or BT.

I would like to know what hardware/equipment that I need to setup a network without needing his computer to be switched on. What range does a PCI WiFi Card, PC laptop WiFi card, BB router system have, which cards have a stronger range while being easy on the battery etc.

Crumbs, 200m, i dont no a lot about this but havent heard of anything that can work over this distance  . I may very well be wrong but would be interested to learn of sumting that could work over this range.
Im sure it would just invole a very strong wireless router and pci cards :).

As far as I know you can use an empty Pringles can to get a signal to travel a few kilometres (directional) and get very good performance.

www.irishwan.org is the place to look for advice though, invaluable resource.

Looking at reviews on cnet, the max distance you will get on pci/pcmcia cards is approx 330ft and that is indoors. What you see in reality depends on a lot of environmental conditions and the power of the devices.

200metres is nothing. But, if you can't see each other youve got big problems. Look into getting antennas that can see each other, say one on each roof, or one on a window sill with another at the far end of their garden on a pole. TBH, any decent set up will cost you a lot and be hassle. You should really just pay for your net access.

Yes, it would be easier to pay for my net access. I am waiting on NTHell to hurry up and upgrade the cables so that i can use there service. I checked on the Eircom site and my home phone number failed the test, I am sure if they got an engineer out, it would pass, but I will not pay more then €20-25 for 1-2Mbit broadband. Any more then that and it is just not worth the money. In sweden you can get 24Mbit BB for only €18/mnth. Why should I get ripped off when I dont have to. It is easier to share a connection and split the cost.

It will be easier to broadcast a signal 200m then to receive one. I was hoping that I could buy or build a sensitive antenna and an amplifier to boost the reception and allow me to connect to my uncles AP. That would be the hard bit, boosting the signal from my wifi card to send a signal back would be easier.
