hey, i do the same course only im going into 2nd year now. last year tallaght sent me all my registration info on the day before we had to register. their just a bit slow. :p You will be back around the 19th of September but you should check www.it-tallaght.ie because they put updates and registration details for new students on the home page, and if you dont receive your reg pack and your getting worried just ring them, might aswell get your €750 worth!

Im going into my fourth year in tallaght. Social life is fairly good but it depends on you whether you get the most from it or not.
There is college wide socials every few weeks, which are usually quite good and are in decent venues in town. However these events are always over sold and the venues are never big enough. If you want to make the most of the social scence in college you need to organise nights out with people in your class, like going to the pub or heading into town every now and again. I did a national cert in computing for my first 2 years in tallaght, there was 200 students in the year the social life amoung ourselves wasnt great. There was too many people and too many different groups of friends to organise anything decent amoung ourselves. However after graduating from computing I decided to do European Studies. Theres only 20 students in my class and we have a great social life within the college. Everyone is up for going out, playing a game of football or whatever. So I suppose to get the best from the college social life you should try organise things with your class every now and again. Everyone is always up for up and you get to know your class mates much better. Theres no point in leaving it to the students union to organise your college social life, theres no point in just waiting for the next college social to go out. They will usually disappoint you.
Join up loads of clubs and societies too, they usually organise their on social nights out which are usually better.
The college organised nights out have got worse and worse in my opinion. Back in 2002 they were cheaper, had better venues and there was great drinks promotions like 2 for 1 or half price shots. Now they are just uncomfortably over crowded and getting to bar become a nightmare.

    Well, Enjoy

Dont be an idiot, the man is a genius, I have known Ian for years and have full confidence in him. I have left the college nmow but was friends with him and its odd balls like yourself Bocco who make the place a mess.

I totally agree with you. The socials got worse and worse over the years. Back in 1st yr they were good craic like the xmas one out in the ambassador. Even the bus out and back was good fun. The ones in 3rd and 4th yr were a joke though. Queued for 45 mins for a drink at the one in Redz!! They totally oversell the socials. The end of yr one in diva wasnt too bad though but thats probably coz it was my last one ever so we all made the most of it. GOnna miss the place though! The big bad world of work sucks!
You are right though, to get the most out of it you havta organise your own nights out. I was lucky that most of my class were dead sound and alot of us became good friends so it was easy enough to organise our own class nights out every 2 weeks or so.
Who's the president this yr? I just did the usual and voted R.o.n. The election things are quite silly in tallaght though. The first time you hear of the people is when they talk to the people in the canteen that morning. SOme of the past presidents were a joke, Lane anyone???
Anyway, rant over, im gonna miss the place!

Ian Walsh is president this year.I voted for him too. He seems like he's capable for the job, he's a bit like Ken Kinsella. Loud , outspoken and sticks his nose everywhere. Ive spoken to him a good few times, although we dont know each other, he's that type of guy. I reckon he will do a decent enough job, hopefully sort out the socials mess. Your right about the last presidents, they did **** all. Since ive been in Tallaght Ken Kinsella has been the only one to really make an impact. Lane and Eoin didnt really do much,..too quiet!

Quiet doesn't necessarily mean bad, a lot of stuff goes on behind the scenes. And the SU isn't just the President, there's 6 other officers and I don't care who is president, without a good team behind them, they're not going to get things done.

For the record, I've dealt with the new officers and I expect very good things from them. Best of luck to them.

True..Not quite sure what happens behind the scenes.
Id imagine its good craic too

'Craic' is what you make of it. Obviously you meet tons of people and sure you have a lot of fun and all, but you still have 14 hour days and a seemlessy endless amount of work to do. Many a time I didn't leave the office til Kev the security guard physically dragged me from my desk, but sure it was what I signed up for.

The bulk of what you do is very thankless, but that's partly my fault in that it was behind the scenes stuff I didn't want or need praise for.

A lot of things the SU do are taken for granted and would be sorely missed if absent. It's not always sexy and not always fun, but I wouldn't take it back for the world.

good luck to everyone going into first year at the moment! i enjoyed my first year (last year) and everyone is right, it is what you make of it and friends you meet. as for the new su president i didn't vote for him so i dont get a say i suppose. he seems nice though, hopefully he might be a little bit better than last year. all the officers seemed to do last year was hang out with first year science students (fellow classmates) but maybe that was just me...
