Font Size Microsoft Word

In microsoft word (xp) on my computer, the font size is set to 12, but on the screen it is displayed as size 10, which is quite difficult to read without increasing the zoom. When I print the document out, the font size is normal. Is this a bug in Microsoft Word?

    I don't understand your question.

You say that it's both 12 and 10?

Maybe you have zoomed out on the document. Try setting the zoom to 100%. You might find that it's set to something like 86% or something. Word sometimes does that so you can see the entire width of the page on screen.

No, its not that. Instead of the font being displayed as size 12 in the settings, it is displayed as size 10.

    For example:

I have the font size set to 12, ans it should look like this on screen:

but instead it looks like this on screen:

    That's a strange one.

What happens if you change the text size to 10? Does it stay at 10 or 8?

Similarly, what happans when you change the text to size 14? Does it stay at 10, 12 or 14?

Have to say, I've not seen this problem before so I'm just shooting in the dark.

Do you have another computer with a different version of Word? If so, copy the document over to it. Do you get the same problems?

Yeah, the font is always one size smaller. I'll probably just install a new version of Word to see of that solves the problem.

Sorry, but are you sure you're not just doing something stupidly wrong?
It certainly hasn't been in issue with word before.

Install the latest office service pack first.

Try officeupdate.microsoft.com and choose the autoupdate link. You WILL need your original CD though.

What your saying makes no sense. How can you tell (by eye) what size 12pt is? Did you use a ruler on your monitor? It will be different depending on your screen resolution, which monitor you use, the DPI setting for windows, or what zoom is set to in word. If it prints correct it means the text is the right size, but there some display setting you need to change.

I was going to suggest looking at what "Style" is being used, but if there was a problem with that you'd see it on the printout.

Unless you post a screengrab and explain yourself better then noone will know what you are taking about.

How does it look in print preview ?
Because msword still isn't fully wysiwyg

The print preview also depends on the printer. Try installing pdfcreator or pdf995 and printing to it to see if any differerent.

older versions of word wern't great at antialisaing (sp) and changing the zoom by as little as 1% could change the font appearance as if it was bold - I preferred the smallest zoom where the font looked bolder than 1% lower zoom

may be slightly different but in my version of word:

go to "view" menu and pick "print layout"
then in the zoom percentage box choose the "page width" setting.

you will be able to see the representation of the A4 (or whatever) page to scale with the text you type on it.

if at that point there's a difference between what you see and what gets printed out then you know you have a problem. this view option usually has rulers along the sides too so measure some points if you really want to make sure what you produce on screen is what's getting printed out.

a bit OTT, but about 3 minutes work all in all. :)
