Acer, Toshiba or IBM laptop

    Hi, all

I want advice on buying a laptop. :D

Desired price range: around 1500, but definitely under 2000 euro  .

Will use for: watching video (maybe video editing), programming, Photoshop, 3s max…
Must have min specs: 15" screen, should be portable (light and good quality), battery life is important. I prefer Pentium Centrino (not Pentium IV or Celeron). Also hard shell required to protect screen against damages from the outside  .

I am thinking of buying IBM's laptop but can't choose between R51, T42, and T43. Does anyone know the difference?

After surfing the web, found other manufacturer's laptops such as Acer and Toshiba are very good as well as IBM. Maybe I should buy an alternative to IBM laptop?

Can someone please lend me some good advice on what is the best make and model of laptop with the specs I need?

Thanks for any advice you  can share...

The IBM T40 and T42 are the standard we use at work. The T42 has all the usual bells and whisltes (Centrino, great screen, 3-4 hour battery life, very light and portable) plus it has bluetooth. IBM's in general are solid, well built and feature-rich. They are certainly at the higher end of the laptop spectrum (with a price tag to match, I might add).

I have a T41 here (typing this post on it in fact) and having used T20/21/22/40s in the past I would wholeheartedly recommend them - not just cause I used to work for them either :)

Dunno about the R series, but the T's are solid like tom said. The main difference between the T41 and T42 is probably that the latter has a faster CPU, bigger hard drive and maybe bluetooth as standard - does depend on the specific model as to what you get though.

I always wanted to buy a new Thinkpad, but now that Lenovo has bought them it is hard to know what way service and reliability will go.

I know IBM's service was amazing, you could get batteries and all the drivers were still on the website for my old Thinkpad 750c (1994) when I retired it last year.

I'm in a simalar position, had a T42 for the past year but had to hand it in when I left my job. The T42 is certainly a very good machine, thin and light yet packed full of power, mine had a gig of Ram and Centrino 1.7 very quick. The downside is they are pretty expensive. I'm got 3 machines I'm looking at:

IBM T42 with Centrino 1.6GHz, 512 ram and 40 gig HDD, CD writer and 14.1" display. Elara.ie have it at €1,538 ex vat.

I'm leaning towards the Toshiba Tecra A4 OULOOU which I can pick up for just under €1200 ex vat that comes with Centrino 2.0GHz, 512 Ram, 80 Gig HDD, 15.4" widescreen TFT display, 64 mb graphics card, DVD burner and XP Pro. jaguarcompsys.ie are selling the same machine at €1,285 ex vat.

The 3rd one is the Acer Aspire 1693WLMi which comes with Centrino 1.8GHz, 512 Ram, 80 Gig HDD, 15.4" WXGA TFT screen, DVD burner and the best bit is it comes with a 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X600. Thats €1,169 ex vat on elara.ie.

I'd be interested to hear what others think?
