Cheap Cigarettes

I wasn't sure if this should go here or the travel/holidays section. Sorry if it is in the wrong place.

I smoke about 30-40 cigarettes per day and my girlfriend smokes about 20. I am considering getting a cheap Aer lingus flight to, possibly, Warsaw on a Saturday and buying 30 - 35 cartons of cigarettes (6000 - 7000) and then flying home on Sunday.

I have checked with the Irish Customs and they said that once they are for my personal consumption, it is perfectly legal. I told them that I would be bringing in about 6000 cigarettes and they said that I would not have to declare them, but if stopped I may be asked to prove that they were for my personal consumption. The customs official admitted that he didn't know how I would be able to do this though. He did say that I would need the receipt to prove that they were bought legally.

Buying the cigarettes at roughly €20 per carton of 200 (possibly cheaper) and the flights (€180), hotel for 1 night (€60) and other basic expenses (€100) coming to a total of about €1,000, I would have cigarettes with an Irish value of about €2,000. A saving of €1,000 for 1 day's work.
They would easily fit into a large case and would weigh less than 2 stone. As far as I know, western brands like silk cut are available there.

Has anybody else any thoughts on this or any experience of doing this or could they suggest a better place in the EU for cheaper cigs?

I must stress that they would be for my own personal use. I'm just sick of paying €6.25 per packet.

Great idea there, still though its a lot of effort just to get your fix at a cheaper rate

It's only legal when they are for your personal use. If you say some of them are for your girlfriend, you will have to pay duty on those cigarettes or they will be seized.

great savings plan, but think about what your doing: leaving the country and going all the way across europe..... to get cigarettes....its madness

Although Poland is a member of the EU, cigarette restrictions still apply until december 2008, maybe Customs aren't aware :o

I haven't bought cigarettes in this country in over three years.
    They cost too much here.

And customs, (everwhere besides Dublin) is non existant.
I flew into Shannon from the states with over 5000 smokes sitting
on top of the trolley, wasn't questioned by anyone.
I've often brought a couple of thousand back from Europe as well,
    never any hassle.

I've bought 3 cartons off the net within the past 4 weeks from different sites - average price for Marlboro Lights is $16-$17 per carton. Ciggies come by registered post, all originating in Moscow. Google "duty free cigarettes" and such words. check www.smokinglobby.com - found this site in my quest for cheap smokes

i think there is something quite sad about what you're doing. Yes you will save money but it just shows what a slave to the weed ye are. As karltimber, save yerself €2k by giving up! highly hipocrytical of me cause i smoke too but there ye go. who knows, maybe i'll give up as well. as soon as i finish my 200 i brought back from me hols that is.

me thinks i might have a bi-polar personality. no i dont.

Tis a pity I cant order anymore, I used to like to get them in cartons.
As others have said, your better off giving them up. I had to when I started to lose the feelings in my legs.

Have they been delivered yet? Customs copped on to buying-cheap-fags-off-the-net a long time ago, and most people ordering off those sites now get hit with an import duty bill before they can receive their smokes.

But for €1000 it is well worth it. You could make a holiday out of it too, getting paid a grand to go on holidays is a fine idea. Stay for the week and you have it paid for.

There was a thread in this section a while ago with EU countries legally selling smokes, no duty payable because it was in the EU. The savings were not huge, but certainly worthwhile, for branded smokes that are probably genuine.

You could always take a trip to Lidl a couple of kms away from Ruzyne airport near Prague. Unlike the Lidls here, they sell their own brand fags. !9 Marlboro Lite clones "Claridge" (even the pack is the same color - and the nicotine/tar is on a par!) Cost about one euro each over at the checkout. I came back about a month ago with 75 packs. I would have gotten more but I got the evil eye from my non-smoking wife. There is a hell of a lot of counterfeiting going on in the fag trade, re the major brands on mainland Europe, so at least you can trust good old Lidl!

Nice idea, I might do that myself.... Now, can all the non-smokeres F-off and let us smokers debate this?

    Thx in Advance,
    Papa.

I'm an ex-smoker but i totally agree with papa, if you're going to try preach just stay out of the thread. Its ****ing annoying.

Hes looking for opinions on his idea, not condenscending remarks coming from smart arses.

i remember a thread on here not so long ago about the whole buying cigarettes online thing. Somebody was recommending using www.smokeria.com (i think?) because if you got hit with customs charges then they had an arrangement where all you had to do was refuse to pay the charges and the cigarettes would just be sent back with no cost to yourself(You were also refunded your money). A no risk situation eh? One guy said he was going to try and we all waited to see what would happen. In the end he never got back us so i still remain suspicious buying online.

When i was in spain you could buy "dorchester" cigarettes for a little over €9 for a carton. They are a lot like john player/benson & hedges, and unlike most cheap brands over there they come in proper cigarette boxes, none of them papery packets
