Currently a little over 20 minutes drive to work, which will shrink to around 15 minutes when I move into the new abode (any closer and I'd be living in Shannon... urgh!)

Actually, I'm not sure if this thread applies to me, seeing as I don't (generally) use public transport.

From Sandycove to work in Sandyford ind estate 1 hour by car or 20 minutes by Vespa px scooter most days :D . Any longer and I wouldn't bother working....I don't understand people who commute for 1.5-2 hours plus in a car daily??? House prices vs quality of life, I know which one I'd pay more for.

About 45 mins on a bus then a 10 min walk or a 45-50 min cycle if its a nice day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭AndrewMc

25 minute walk, then 1 hour train and finally 45 minutes (at least) bus, each way. I like the walk when it's dry, the train is pretty reliable (and comfortable even if it's late), but the bus is just awful - unpredictable, frequently packed and frustratingly slow in the traffic. Fortunately, I can now work from home twice a week, which has helped my sanity quite a bit.

Edit: Funnily enough, when a friend drove me in once, it was only about 20 minutes faster...

Nothing personal but why did you decide to live somewhere so far from everything? If you say cost of housing were the only peoperties you could afford all that far out?

I too would go for quality of life almost any day - having said that, it can be tricky to strike the right balance!

Extensive commuting time is the number one thing that puts me off moving to Dublin.

At one stage my older brother was living in west Dublin and his job was in Sandyford, so it took him over two hours in the morning to drive the distance, via the M50 carpark, and then the same amount of time in the evening. He described it as unbelievably tiring, difficult to get through work properly / make informed decisions, not to mention the price in terms of fuel consumption.

So he and his family moved house and are now just 20 mins away from his workplace - not without a price, though, as the house was extremely expensive. Despite this, the quality of his life has improved immeasurably.

Six minutes was my best but its not really that far. That was on my wee 125 back when we had miles per hour. Now I'm doing about ten minutes by bike, fifteen in the car depending on traffic lights.

Beats the two buse's, two hours when I was in college.

time on the train isn't totally wasted like other comuting time as you can read or sleep (sometimes) or even use a laptop - unless of course the train is overcrowded.
you could get a bicycle if there was somewhere very safe to leave the bike to cut down a bit on the walk.

Hmm, I useta have to travel 15miles by car, 1hr10 by train, Luas (hueston-Connolly), 10mins Dart to work each day. and of course back again.

these days, it's 7 minutes to cover 5miles! by car

To start with, as Capt'n Midnight said, the time on the train isn't really wasted - I don't have a laptop (yet) but can get plenty of reading done. Telecommuting would also be better if Eircom weren't such useless wasters.

The rest of it is more difficult to explain. We could have bought closer to Dublin, but we just didn't want to. Yes, it's true that house prices here allow you to spend less and get more. But it's also quiet. I mean really quiet, the sort of quiet you just can't get in Dublin. The whole town is pretty relaxed, you get to know people easily, you can be out in the open countryside or in the centre of the town after walking just 10-15 minutes, the pubs are cheaper(!), the air is cleaner...

The point really is that, apart from commuting(3 days a week), I reckon the quality of life here is much better.

I used to cycle to the station, but haven't in a while. It actually only saved about 5-7 minutes once you took into account the time taken to get the bike out, put on the helmet, lights and high-vis, and lock up at the other end. And then you've to carry all the bits and pieces for the rest of the day. I also feel better after the walk than I did after the cycle.

    Used to work in Shankhill...

By public transport (commuter train, DART and shuttle bus): 90 mins+ (and longer in the evenings)
By car: 1hr - 90 mins max (depending on city centre traffic).

Now that I've moved jobs: 35 mins door - door , again by car

    ***

    Blanch - Coolock...
    Public transport (2 / 3 buses as there's no direct route): 90 mins - 2hrs+
    By car: 25-40 mins

For me, even though it costs more, the better quality of life I have since getting the car is worth the expense.... no more queuing in the cold/wet for buses that are late or don't show at all (eg: last Saturday's 19:30 route 239 from Blanch SC - Liffey Valley .. called Harristown: "oh we dont have a driver, next one is 21:30" and then he hung up on me - scum! :(), no more having to stand all the way to my destination, no more scumbags to listen to (passengers and in some cases drivers), and of course home at a decent hour.

Public transport just doesn't work in this country (for a variety of reasons) and until it does, people will continue to buy cars and put up with the traffic cause anything is better than the above!

1.5 to 2 hour drive depending on what time i leave....

    20 min walk + 1hr 15min bus + 30 min walk if i get bus...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 153 ✭✭Dutchboy

Clonskeagh to Merrion Square, at most 15mins cycle :)
Never take bus, no11, no bus lanes= disaster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

Starting back at college, which is a 12 min walk from new house.
    Previous job (in Skopje): 5 mins walk + 20 mins bus + 5 mins walk = 30mins
Job before that (Dublin): 10 mins cycle or 5 mins bus (+ avg. 10 mins wait for bus)
Job before that (also Dublin): 12 mins cycle there, 5 mins cycle back. Or 15 mins by public transport.

Because I'm single and rent - I tend to move house to avoid potential long commutes.

North City Centre to Eastpoint Business Park. 10/15 minute cycle, or a 15 minute drive, or a 35 minute walk.

I used to commute from Greystones. That was 1hr 20mins on the Dart plus a 10minute walk. That was horrible, but I seem to hate the Dart more than others for some reason..

Live in Drogheda; work in City Centre:

Mornings 1 hr and 15 mins (12 mins to commuter station, 45 – 50 mins Enterprise service to Dublin Connolly, 15 mins walk or 10 mins luas to work)

Evenings 1 hr (15 mins walk or 10 mins luas to Connolly, 31-35 mins Enterprise service to Drogheda, 12 - 15 mins to walk home wrecked).

I live in Baldoyle, Dublin 13 and on average it takes me 60 minutes to commute to my college UCD.

5 minute walk to DART, 35 minutes on DART and either 25 minute walk to Belfield or get no.3 bus which takes 10 minutes. Getting home is the probalem becasue I never know the bus or DART times and their unsavoury reliability means it can sometimes take an hour and a half to get home.

At the moment, it would take me about 80 mins door-to-door, but once I move out, it should be down to about 30.
