    Hi guys..
I have a dell inspiron on the way to me and one of the first things I want to do is have win98 and xp installed on it so that xp boots as default but if i want win 98 I can go into the boot menu (or whatever) and load it manually..

I assume a boot manager is what I need to do this.Which is best..?

Also if I install xp pro onto my laptop from a disk that came with my desktop. is that infringment of copyright laws and can microsoft detect this??Just curious...

    Thanks...

Not a problem at all. Easiest way is to have two partitions, install 98 first, install XP second and put it on the second partition. XP will deal with the boot management itself so you don't need to install anything extra if you don't want to. It's shockingly easy, a slightly trained monkey could probably do it.

As for using your desktop copy of XP on your laptop, it's certainly against the licensing agreement so your installed copy won't be legitimate if you go that route and if it's BIOS locked as many OEM copies of XP are, you may not be able to install it anyway.

Wont the activation issue also arise as soon as XP installed on the laptop?

thanks guys, on the desktop pc where the win sp tag is on the chassis it says win xp 1-2 cpu...and 2 oem xp disks came with the pc. does this mean it is licensed for use on 2 computers??

    I would think so, yes.

Definitely not. Read the licensing agreement that came with the thing if you like but definitely not.
