    Hi,
I'm trying to configure AMANDA with a HP 40/80 GB DLT tape drive. Never done this before. Anyone got any insight into this?

    What's the problem you're seeing?
First suggestion would be to forget the 80.
    It's a 40GB DLT tape drive.
    Turn off hardware compression.

I always favour doing compression in software, as you're much more likely
to be able to get the data back using another vendor's drive if necessary.

I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Really? I was reading somewhere that running hardware compression on its own will hit the 80 gig mark. Just finished running the amtapetype program, so on to the rest of the config file.

    Really!
You may fit 80GB of user data onto the tape,
or you may only fit 50GB - depends on the files.
There is always room for 40GB worth of backup data on it.

It is much easier for amanda to plan backups when it can
perform its estimates with software compression.
Otherwise you run the risk of running out of tape,
which amanda does not handle particularly elegantly.

Stick with it though, once configured, amanda requires very little feeding.

PS: I know amtapetype can take ages, but it's worth running it twice for the drive anyway with hw compression on and off.
