Hello, Im trying to fix a computer with ME installed. I think a few of the system files are damaged kernel32.dll (possibly) The windows messaging server etc.

I dont have the disk. Can I get them off the internet and replace the damaged with new, anyway? Or whats the best thing to do?

The best thing to do is get rid of Win ME, it's absolutly muck. Has to be the worst OS microsoft have made.

I'm not sure if it'd be legal, but if it is, you could try doing a search for them on a P2P file sharing program.

Seriously , unless you have the disk, don't bother. I'm sure someone here will back me up on my statement earlier. I can't emphasize (spell) how bad ME is, I think Microsoft developed it in conjunction with Satan, Hitler's ghost and some 8 year old school kid.

Dude, thats being too kind. OP, Windows 98 was better than ME.

Windows Millenium Edition? It should have been titled 'Windows Millennium Bug Edition'. I think Scooter pretty much sums it up in Track 5

A word of warning - XP eats resources.

Win 98 SE is your best option for anything less than 1GHz, Win 2K for 1GHz-2GHz region.

If you really want it, I'll post you a WinMe reinstall CD. Otherwise I'd go with Gurgle and recommend 98SE (or Win2k if the PC is up to it)

    LOL :)

It is the only MS OS I have never worked with since DOS 5. I've succesfully tried to avoid it like the plague

Its got 64mb of RAM and its a celeron running @ 650mhz. Will I get away with XP? Otherwise, I may need you to post that Occidental, I dont have 2000 or 98 copies lying around.

That spec is not going to run XP very well.

I know someone will flame me for even suggesting this, but have you considered Linux? You can even get Linux distro's these days that look and feel very much like Windows :D

    Go for windows 2K.
It's not XP, but it's certainly a lot more stable than ME.

well, its for a woman and shes a primary school teacher so linux would definitely not be the right way to go.

Yeah, I'd recommend 2k as well - I've seen it running quite nicely on PCs around 350-500MHz, though I'd recommend at least 128MB RAM (64 is too low for anything these days IMO). It may not be as fast as 98 on that kind of system, but it more than makes up for that with better stability and support (especially concerning USB devices).

It sure is a big pile of dog poo, but I did run it happily for about 6 months until I got XP, after my 98 disk went missing.

I agree with the majority, get win98 se somewhere, and download IE 5 (I think that was the last version available)

yeah but win98 doesn't have usb support, right? Thats important, she has a digital camera or am I thinking of hotplugging

Win 98 has USB support. Heck, there's a version of Win95 which has USB support.

Use Win2K, if you can. I've used Win2K on a laptop with 32MB RAM, and a 233MHz Pentium. Upgraded it to 128MB RAM, and it runs much quicker.

    Win 98 SECOND EDITION

First release of Win 98 is just Win 95 re-packaged, with minimal USB support.
98SE has full USB support & its the best home version OS they've made.

And your vote goes to.... ?

XP home ? (i.e. Win 98SE all coloured in, with some brightly coloured new bugs.)

    Windows 3.1 ?
    Windows 95 ?
    Windows ME ?

I never said it was particularly wonderful but its certainly their best effort!
