What kind of salary should one except with a good 2:1 degree lots of part time work experience?

Course was mainly through Java including J2EE projects.

That's what I was thinking but some of the jobs on Monster / IrishJobs have 30K.

May have an interview soon and not sure what to ask for if I get it.

    depends what you are doing.

about 8 euro if you are in mcdonalds, probably more if you are an investment banker.

    :)

try and be a bit more specific.
wages dont really go with degree standings, they just help you get the job.

Just heard back there. Interview is tomorrow and the role is QA / Testing. I already have 4 months experience with ESB as a tester on SAP system.

Well done on getting an interview. :)

Doing QA aswell - just know the job spec . Seen as you did it before you should be fine

Keep us posted on how that goes.

SAP will always stand to you.

I'd guess around the low 20's mark.

Good luck with the interview. Let us know what they offer you ;)

For your experience look at 0-2 years. Most likely to be 20K-25K

Really depends on what area the business is in for a salary level. For example I saw a junior position for a vba(Excel) developer go for 40k per year. However it was working in an investment bank on the front desk (Trade desk).

I've been working there for about 6 weeks and in my time 2 people have already been fired from my team. So generally you have to be reasonably good or they let go of you.

I am getting about 25k (with no experience) so I reckon thats the average rate.

The truth is, there is no "average" salary.

    You have a few options.

Take an "IT" job that pays slightly more than the minimum wage i.e. tech support or some other monkey work. Work there for 6 months to a year and hope that it counts as "experience".

Look for something that you have no real interest in, but pays reasonably well and hope that you don't get too used to the money and can hopefully find something more suitable.

Or, find something you want to do and accept slightly less pay with the knowledge that when you prove yourself you'll get a rise and at least you'll be happy in your work.

Realistically, you're going to be starting somewhere between 20k-25k, lower if it's tech support.

You'll be lucky to start at 25k unless you have some skills/experience relevent to the job.

It's best not to get a figure in your head and then be disappointed if you don't get it.
You need to weigh up all the pros and cons, money isn't everything.

I'd rather start on lower pay in a job i like and have my pay rise gradually, than start at higher pay in something i don't really like.

Investment banks tend to pay well but expect you to earn it in their eyes. From what I've seen, they've no issues with firing you, but if you are good at your job you'll be well rewarded salary wise.

I guess your right and I basically got lucky in landing such a well paying job. However, I am just going by the people I know in my class most are getting around the same as me with a couple of exceptions. Sure thats only a small ammount of people, so I guess its not really represtative.

I told them where to shove it. Joke!!!

Interview went well. Seemed quite positive.

my first job out of college was as a software developer:
    25k
    vhi
    free soft drinks
    project bonus
that was 6 years ago so looks like no change is salaries
    in 6 years.

alot of big companies take on lots of gratuates, then
keep the best and fire the rest before their probation is up.

Slightly off-topic here, but I don't see much point on starting a new thread. How long should someone stay in there first IT job? I was thinking about a year / year and a half.

Sounds right lol. Right now money isn't a huge thing really, I am thinking long term and reckon experience is more important. Your advice is of course sound and probably what I might do.
