My dad returned from London Gatwick to today, at the check desk he was told he was 5kg over weight. The woman informed him that he had to pay 23 pounds sterling or 53 euro. So he pays the 53 squid right, my mom is totally confused on his at the fact he had to pay 53 euro as 23 pounds only equates to 33 euro so what my question is what the hell are they at.

I'm guessing by the fact that you posted this here you have access to the internet and could have looked this up yourself, but anyway:
    http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=bag&quest=baggageallowance
    Excess Baggage:
Checked baggage in excess of 15kg will be charged at the rate of £4.50/€7 (or local currency equivalent) per kilo in excess on all routes.
So for 5kg he should have paid £22.5 or €35 (as opposed to €53)

Did they figure this out based on a weight/height index?

People who are getting a flight with another airline before a connecting one with Ryanair will often get caught for being 5kg over. Every airline other than them has at least a 20kg baggage allowance for bags going in the hold, Ryanair's is only 15kg.

Unless your carry on bag as already looking heavy to the people at the checkin though you can usually get away with just carrying more stuff on so that they dont charge you. Ryanair allow you to have 10kg as carry on though but others will only allow 5kg. It is rare to get the carry on bags checked though.

    Good luck getting money back...

when you work in ryair check in you have whats callled an "overweight allowence" you must make each month... i.e you have a target to make in excess baggage and if you dont make it you get sacked, also the person who gets the highest excess by a certian time gets to go home early... ive heard of the girls putting thier weight on the scales just so they can make thier target and or go home early

I would of raided suitcase and taken something out....Happened to me going with Aerlingus, bag was slightly over weight,so nice girl at check in said "They might load it on plane, might not".So I opened suitcase and took out toiletries bag and it was under weight, brought it on as hand luggage.**

So they musn't have to tally it with extra revenue then so. Why ever bother for them. Its a great plan! Well done the fine femininis.

Last time i travelled with Ryanair ended up paying sixty quid between me and my gf for our bags, on the same flight i met an english couple who had to switch their flight from BA to Ryanair, their original flight was a special offer at 17 quid sterling each and BA paid the difference for their flight change but Ryanair charged them 95 euro for their bags nearly twice what their combined flight charges are.
I later flew from portugal to cologne with GermanWings (their equivalent of Ryanair) no weight allowance, cheaper than the same ryanair flight and much more comfy plane(on the ryanair flight to port i was sittin on something sticky the whole way WTF!)

WDK, all i can advise is DONT waste your time trying to get the moeny back  . Will not happen, this airline has 0% skill when it comes to customer service. I have a long story, but in short ill never fly with them again  .

Love them or hate them, Ryanair do have some of the newest commercial planes in the world, so I woudln't be too concerned about that side of things.

The only problem I have had with Ryanair is when they landed in the wrong airport. OK, so that was due to fog, and they stuck us all on busses to get us to where we were supposed to be.

But so long as when you use Ryanair you dont expect anything more than say a trip on Dublin Bus but with wings on the side then you wont be doing too badly.

Well LUCKY you  . I had the exact same thing happen to me, only difference, we got to the wrong airport, it was empty and they flew back to london  . Left us stranded  . Told us there was a bus coming, waited like 2 hours, had to eventually rent a car for a carzy price and then drive 2 and a half hours in the middle of the night.
And did they refund us.............. .

What would u have liked us to do?? We sat in a deserted airport the size of my house for 2 hours. I still dont no if any busses ever arrived? Most of the people ended up hiring cars. We could of sat there for 3-4-5 hours waiting for these *busses*. There was no1, craziest situation iv ever been in. They just got back on the plane and left.
