Anyone know much about this ?
Its the new GP32, due out soon. Where it'll be released I am not sure but it looks like it could be excellent.

Was gonna buy a GP32 (especially with MameGP 1.7 just out) but might wait now for this beauty :D

I never looked into the GP32 much but I had a look at a few sites and I must say I'm well impressed. They've got emulators, applications and even a 10 frame/sec divx player (crap quality but maybe the gpx2 will handle this better).

The gpx2 will even have a tv-out adapter.

I was a little bit confused about whether the homebrew, community based development was endorsed by the manufacturer or not, can anyone clarify what the situation because it looked to me like they promoted the development of emulators but I might not have been looking at official sites.

Okay, it looks like there will be two new handheld consoles, one from gamepark Holdings (gpx2) and one from Gamepark (XGP). The two companies split and are now competing. The GPX2 from GPH is aimed more at homebrew development and early demonstrations show that it took them 30 minutes to port a linux gameboy emulator to the GPX2 which bodes well. The XGP on the other hand does not seem to be designed with homebrew development in mind and runs GPOS which I dont think is a linux variant.

GPH is also in the process of changing its name so be aware that GP refers to the manufacturer of the XGP not GPX2 (which I think may also be renamed to GP2X due to copyright problems)

Also, there is no gaurantee that the GPX2 will be able to emulate anything other than the gameboycolour as yet but I would be surprised if it couldnt.

    other differences:
The XGP will have an opengl 3d chip whereas the gpx2 (or is it gp2x now?) will have dual ARM250Mhz cpus.
I havent seen any mention of wireless support which is a pity as I was thinking of using one for controlling XBMC via a wifi connection to the XBMC webserver.

just looking at their website, I must say it looks like an impressive piece of kit. I wonder how much it will cost when it's released.

'apparently' it will be a bit cheaper than the original GP32.

Just got an e-mail from Craig at GBAX, the good news is the GPX2 is only going to be £124.99 and will come with a free carry case and earphones for a limited time.

i'vbe always wanted a gp32 but never had the flow, but i put my name on the preorder list and then paid foir the gp2x a few days ago, i'll receive one from the first batch, anyway, this machine will do more than gameboy color, if you look at the wealth of emus that the gp32 has, one cn expect all of these and more. possible fullspeed snes, the control layout on the gp2x is identical to snes controllers. anyway, they are expected to be out, at the end of october, anyone else here preordered? if not i'll give ye the lowdown when it arrives.

Well lik-sang cancelled ALL preorders !
They said that too many of the devices were found to be faulty !

They are now selling what they call version 2 for a release early next year.

i heard about that, but i'd heard about some dodgy screens and buttons and stuff, not everything could be fixed with firmware.

    Is there any wifi support?

What is the movie playback like? The older one operated a t 10fps, I presume this one is better?

ther is talk of wifi supoort via sd card, as some sd cards come with antenna attached, the movie playback is super, videos look great, the system supports up resolutions up to 720 but plays back 320x240, but displays stuff on tv (with tv out cable) at the original encoded resoulution. also, psx emu just released. its slow but works, displays 3d and is believed to be using only one of the processors, and no optimisation. soon developers will be able to bypass os and work directly with the kernel, spedding things even moreso.

Cool, thanks for the info. The PSone emulator sounds very promising, even the xbox had trouble emulating that!

I was thinking it would be a nice wi-fi controller (with display) for the xbox media centre web interface. Then you could control all your media from the handheld and keep the xbox controllers out of sight.

Is full GBA emulation also possible? I'm not too interested in PSX emulation due to the rom size.....

you find answers to GBA/GBC/PSX etc. emulation related questions on the GP2X handheld here ... www.gp32x.com/

this scene is small but very active, with some very clever developers

working emulators include MAME (Black Tiger!!), ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari 800 .. a bunch of various gameboy flavours, and best of all a Megadrive emulator... happy days.

There is also a Playstation One emulator ... but I've not seen it working yet.

If you are any interested in retro games ... this scene is well worth a look.

ridge racer for the psx clocks up to 11megs, thats without the music tracks, so "romsize" aint an issue, also there loads of rip and compression utilities for making the iso's smaller. how big they are does not matter to the emu or the 64mb of memory on the machine. it only reads what is currently onscreen kinda deal. the psx emu is slow, but it runs ridegracer and when you over clock the gp2x it plays that little spaceinvaders intro quite well, but on a whole the emu needs work.

hope the PSX emulator will continue to evolve ... the dev kits have only been out a few weeks, so the fact that it runs at all is pretty amazing ... will definitely check it out ... is it difficult to get it running on the GP2X ?

now ... if only someone would port a Dreamcast emulator ... imagine a portable Soul Calibur
