    iriverter should do the job.

downsize as in resolution or file size (or both)?

Resolution - Dr DivX works miracles
Size - same, or VirtualDubMod (I'd downscale audio first, to lowest acceptable, rather than frame)

I'm sure there's much more potent SW out there, but I've used these for years and never a bother, across quite a few HW formats with 'exotic' resolutions.

I should have been more specific. Need to limit to 320*240 (Pocket PC max resolution) and indeed would like the AVI to go down to about 200MB from the original of 650-700MB. Original audio but video only a quarter of the size of standard VGA

Tried irreverter and dr. divx but they don't give much control over file size. Then looked briefly at VirtualDubMod but it scared me

Then tried AutoGK (which uses VirtualDubMod but is very easy to use) which didn't give me much control either

Brazed myself and went into VirtualDubMod and it isn't half as complicated as it looks. Results: perfect (230MB, 320*240) :D

You'll find that audio encoding config. makes a world of difference to file size (both in terms of kHz and in terms of bitrate), more so than frame size... unless you're talking about some 'serious' re-scaling of course, e.g. SVCD+ down to EGA- (or, say in the Ninty GBA/SP/DS case, 120 x 120-ish pixels ).

Generally, I prefer to downscale audio first as frame proc (can) generate artefacts, while audio "re-streaming" don't :)

    DIVX for Pocket PC

Theres a program out there somewhere, I have it at home, couldnt find a link to it right now.

Lets you choose the file size / audio / video options you want.

Seriously? I'd have guessed video took up the vast majority of size

Would you do me and probably a lot of other people a favour by posting some screenshots of the setting you would use to get a typical DVD rip (700MB AVI) down to 320*240 max (but preferably 320*whatever height to keep the original aspect ratio) while downgrading the audio to something basic that will be played through either the speaker or the headphone socket of the Pocket PC

    Much obliged :)

Unkel as an avid supporter of iRiverter myself and knowing the developer quite well I can say try this link to my guide to converting videos to the PMP which uses the same specs as most PDAs.

    http://www.misticriver.net/boards/showthread.php?t=27840

Unlike what the other poster mentioned .14 has a load of bugs that many seem to find so we advise .13r1.

I use it to convert a lot of DVDs I have and other video files. Also the reason the file size on iRiverter is so high is because it is at a higher bit rate.

Other options are dvdx 2.3 which again is free.

I assume it's already a Divx? You might want to be carefull, if you encode it again as a divx with Auto Gordian knot or some such, you might get some crazy compression artifacts.

Gurgle that's brilliant! Took about 15 minutes, very easy to use and to control audio / video quality and it shows you the file size up front. With the default settings the file is now a very compact 149MB

    Much appreciated :)
