    What PC do you have?

    Self-build?

bit of a self built. keep adding stuff to it. i have three hard drives all the ide slots are filled a 256mb graphic card. yet i have never gone near the cooling. now i am paying for it

You probably have way too much stuff rigged up without adequate cooling. I doubt what you built was originally intended to power so much stuff.....all those drives AND a 256mb gfx card...no no :o

    /prob your psu?

Maybe worth your while looking at your power supply. It could be failing.Try another in it to confirm.

What makes you think its getting to hot?Bios temperature readings?

    regards,kieran

put a zalman fan on the cpu or if u budget covers it a nice watercooling kit
try specing things as much as possible like have the HDD apart and not having any pci cards next to the gfx card
get larger 120mm fans as these will rotate slower and quite then smaller ones

What tempreature is it running at?

How long has it been since you cleaned out your case.

I don't know how many times I've suggested that same option. Computers get filthy inside in the home enviroment and should be cleaned on a very regular basis (I do mine monthly).

Check all your heatsinks for dust build up - dust = clogged heatsinks = heat build up.

Add extra fans and upgrade psu if needed for this ( xtra fans = xtra power consumption - another often missed requirement).:)

If the OP has added loads to their PC then after the clean a new PSU would be a logical step. They should check the watts on it and get back with a list of components to see if they are underpowered.

Little hint: I had a similar problem. so what I did was disconnect my Floppy and zip to relieve power consumption (never used them anyway) and hey presto it worked.

the cpu reads about 56-60 but the machine only cuts out when playing a game... the psu is the standard one i got with the basic case :o

what would make it cut out. what has cut out features i know the cpu cuts out then to hot ...

Get a program like Motherboard Monitor to monitor your temps. This should be able to log high temperatures too so if it cuts out you'll know what state it was in.

Also, when playing games your graphics card is going to want loads of power. If you're supply isn't up to the task it may crash too. Games would also be more intensive on the CPU causing it to heat up.

I think my CPU cuts off at around 70degrees, if your's is running at 56-60 already then you don't have much headroom left. Get a better heatsink on the CPU, and put inlet and outlet fans on the front and rear of the case to get cool air flowing through it.
