Hi all. Having a problem with windows media player. When i open it, task manager tells me my cpu usage is between 80 to 100%. Surely this isn't normal. Does anyone have a clue whats going on? I'm worried my p4 is going to melt through the motherboard :( Appreciate all help

what are you doing? playing a movie, mp3 or is it just sitting there?

Whats the hard drive doing...quiet or thrashing away?

I dont think you have to worry about yourP4 overheating. Generally if they go above a specifictemperature, the CPU will slow itself down, and not speed up again until it cools AFAIK, but i'm not positive

....and 100% cpu usage doesn't mean it explodes, it first slows down, then shuts down, and unless you badly built your own pc, you've nothing to worry about. Usage doesn't matter, temperature does

It happens a minute or two after i open it. Not playing music or video. Just when its open. Dell 4600. 3ghz p4, 512mb ram. Some stuff running in background. MS antispyware, spybot, zone alarm, norton2003 Ok so it's not going to burn out my cpu but will it damage or in any way hinder my pc
    Thanks in advance

It won't damage or do anything to your PC. I just tested mine and it peaked at 100 but only momentarily, and then levelled at 0. Playing an MP3 it never went higher than 11%.

I'd suggest reinstalling it on top of itself.

    I reckon it's either
    1) trying to update itself
    2) getting track data

Go to add/remove programs. There should be an option to remove windows components. removing wmp will roll it back to the previous version
    Hope this helps

Try leaving it for a while - go off and make a cuppa an watch corrie or something. As another poster suggested it could be scanning for new tracks or something.

A better way of putting it would be that companies do not knowingly release software that damages hardware if
    a) Used correctly.
    b) They might get caught.
    c) They tested it thoroughly.
    d) The user isnt a moron.

Examples of software that can damage your hardware. Overclocking utilities. Bios upgrades.

    [/pedant]
